GPS lifetime maps query!

Hey
I want to purchase a low to medium range GPS that has lifetime maps and it must have red light camera/ speed camera updates. I went to Dick smith and Jb hi fi and talked to the employees about whether these lifemaps include updates on red light camera/ speed camera.
For example:

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/gps-car-audio/tomtom/tomtom-via-22…

This has lifetime maps for a limited time.:
"TomTom knows that great in-car navigation relies on the best quality map. To keep enjoying fast and accurate navigation, your map needs to stay up to date. That's why for a limited time only we are offering FREE Lifetime Maps!* For the life of your product, you can download 4 or more full updates of your map of Australia every year. You receive all updates to the road network, addresses and Points of Interest. The benefit? You can relax in the knowledge that your device will always give you the quickest, most accurate route possible. * By online redemption, T&C's apply, visit www.tomtom.com/map-promotion to register.

I know my Uncle has a GPS where the first year speed light cameras and red lights cameras were included but from then on it cost extra money for it.
My questions is (1) do you believe that these updates will include updates on speed camera and red light cameras?
(2) It is common for lifetime maps to include only maps and not red light camera/speed camera updates?
(3) Can anyone find me a good deal on a GPS?

no much thing as a lifetime map upgrade. companies need money too. only way to get free map is to hack your gps.
only free map out there is googlemap use that.

    • Our Garmin GPS came with "Lifetime Free Maps" and we're still getting map updates (along with red light cameras) almost 4 years after buying it. I expect we'll keep getting updates from Garmin long after we upgrade the GPS…

        I wouldn't count on it.

My "Life Time Maps" for my Garmin 52LM specifically states it is for the life of the GPS unit only. It also does not include red light and other cameras, which are a totally different file type on the GPS - maps are xxx.img files, and cameras are yyy.gpi files.

  • (1) do you believe that these updates will include updates on speed camera and red light cameras?

I know they do for some models of Garmin, which is my preferred brand.

    (2) It is common for lifetime maps to include only maps and not red light camera/speed camera updates?

I've never had map updates that did not include red light camera/speed camera updates.

    (3) Can anyone find me a good deal on a GPS?

As it happens, I'm currently hunting for a GPS for my in-laws - I'll add a reply if I find anything.

    • thanks

I use a TOMTOM with lifetime maps. The updates are only for the maps, not the speed camera nor red light cameras. However, you can add them (by pressing a button) whilst you are driving past a new one (speed camera/red light camera), and your TOMTOM will remember it as a speed/red light camera. I hope this helps.

    • Thanks. That does help

  • I have a TomTom with lifetime maps, and it is for real, but you do have to renew speed cameras and red light cameras, but in my opinion, the saving on map purchases makes it worthwhile. If you need an extra dashboard mount, buy one from amazon.com as it is much cheaper.

    • SO can you add them when you see them at T Scott described?

  • Sygic in my 7" Android tablet?

  • I've had 3 TomTom GPSes over the years which have been solid daily workhorses, but whilst the current interface is unbeatable and the design is great, the last two generations of TomToms has struggled with performance and stability issues. In fact, if you try one in a store, there is a high probability it won't be working properly. Talk to your store staff about returns and you will start to get a bigger picture. There were reports a few years ago that TomTom openly shares it's users speed data with Dutch and Australian road/police authorities, which is upsetting for many users. I am optimistic the next generation will solve the hardware issues.

For the meantime I have a Garmin, which runs flawlessly, is almost as good as the TomTom software.
Downside with the Garmin — not as good at finding a satellite fix, the maps are flaky and street speeds are all frequently lower or higher than the posted limit, making the speed warning features pretty much useless, latest updates are always free but so far haven't improved the Garmin situation.

  • Garmin life time maps are for the life of the unit.

Don't quote me on this, but somewhere in their legal disclaimer the unit is no longer considered 'alive' if you don't update the maps for 2 years or if the update file doesn't fit on the unit due to size. Best do your own research into their legal disclaimers though.

You can use third party Points of Interest databases and update these separately.

    I downloaded from here:

    Stay away from these crooks:

I have ALWAYS used Garmin, so Can't really comment on any other brands.

  • I am currently hunting for a GPS for my mum as a belated Mother's Day present. Found this thread useful - thanks.

FYI - JB Hi-fi has 20% off GPS units this weekend (ends Sunday). Saw signs instore, unsure if in catalogue or online etc.

    Cheers
