Amazon Postage Charges Seem to Be a Bit Extreme

I will be purchasing some DVDs from Amazon but postage comes up as $89. Is this typical for Amazon.
Why do they not have some cheaper shipping options?

Are you sure you are purchasing it from amazon or is it from a seller on amazon?

Amazon is normally extremely cheap for shipping, like $10 for small items then hardly a price increase when you add items.

I just tested it with a DVD and it was:

    Items: AUD 19.58
    Shipping & handling: AUD 9.13

    • +1. I've found from previous experiences shipping from Amazon themselves to be quite reasonable. But sellers on Amazon seem to charge quite an exorbitant amount for postage, at least to be shipped to Australia anyway.

    Amazon is amazing for postage.

Yes, like others said, you are probably buying it from a 3rd party (not amazon)

BTW, who buys dvd's still? Not sure if you know, but BluRay discs have been out for many years now, and have far superior performance.

  • Ok dvds are in the U.S.A.
Just thought 4 items for $89 postage was a bit high.
I think they are resellers but each seller has same postage cost.

  • If you buy from a private seller they will charge their own postage fees.
Buying from Amazon is very very cheap from the US and shipping to QLD for me normally takes around 3-4 days

    • I have no idea what Im doing wrong then.

      • Have a look in the buy box and check the seller.
If it is sold by Amazon, you'll be fine.
If it is sold by another seller but fulfilled by amazon - also fine.

If it is sold and shipped by another company - you will not get Amazon's postage rates (so it would be like what you would pay to post a parcel to the US, a lot more than Amazon)

        Good luck!

If you're going to be buying from different individual sellers, it is worth your while to use a shipping forwarder.

    • Im a bit green with this. How do I use a shipping forwarder on Amazon?

The last one I used was MyMallBox. My purchase was being fulfilled by Amazon but wouldn't ship to Australia. I signed up to MyMallBox, they gave me an address which I added to my Amazon account and notified me when it arrived for them. Items got to me about 2 weeks later.

I'm not sure if individual sellers which aren't fulfilled through Amazon can avoid the $35 free shipping threshold within USA, but you should be able to get a few DVDs for much less than Amazon items which aren't actually fulfilled by Amazon.

There is a stack of them and essentially they give you a postal address in the US. You get Amazon to post your stuff there and they then forward it on to you in Australia. To use them you go the forwarder's website and sign up for a postbox. Once you have it you then type this address in as the delivery address for your Amazon parcel. Potentially they can save you money as some will 'consolidate' all of the little parcels into a single larger parcel.

Some trips for the uninitiated though, some of the forwarders charge a 'joining' or 'membership' fee to setup your mailbox. Some charge an ongoing monthly subscription plan and others have varying postage rates depending on whether you are a 1-off or a subscription member. Some have a schedule of rates and will charge you for things like consolidation or for storing parcels before shipping them on. Beware also the 'volumetric' postage rates whereby instead of being charged by the actual weight of the parcel you get charged based on what they estimate the weight should be based on the volume or size of the box, ie small item surrounded by bubble wrap inside a large box = big postage charge.

I think there is a thread on here somewhere where people have used and rated the different services. I have used a mob called parcelsforwarding and they were OK, some swear by another called shipito others love myus.com. My experience is that, despite their advertising their postage rates aren't cheap at all. Some are outrageous and others are just OK. The consolidation might save you money over postage for buying 4 x small parcels at $40 a pop = $160 postage and mabe the forwarder will charge you fees of $10 - $15 and postage of $60 = $75 saving you money overall but you aren't likely to get a forwarder that will charge you the $8 postage normally charged from Amazon.com.

Amazon is one of my favourite US shops but I always buy from Amazon.com because the postage is normally a killer buying from anybody else through Amazon.

On the left of the screen scroll downwards. At the bottom you will see a vertical listing of all of the sellers that satisfy your search criteria, top of the list should be Amazon.com. Click that box and if the item you are after is still available you should be OK. I just bought 3 items of warm cycling clothing for these cold mornings, $300 worth of clothes, $8 postage to Oz. All from Amazon.com, I don't even bother considering non Amazon.com sellers as the postage normally kills the deal.

    • Thanks for your help.

I'm understanding how Amazon works now.
      Pity they don't use PAYPAL
