Google Chrome Is Crashing, Can't Even Open/Load

Since last week, Google Chrome is crashing repeatedly. It can't even open/load properly before it crashes. I use X64 version, changed to X86 but no change at all. Did Malwarebytes and MSE scan, but nothing came up. It has been at least 10 times I've re-installed Chrome but nothing works. I have also tried this but same result - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/161302

Interesting points are -

  1. Problem starts when I sign into Chrome using my google account, there is no problem if I use chrome without signing in. My synced bookmark file size is 2MB :)
  2. I first experienced this problem at my work, but my home PC is also experiencing the same. I use the same Google account everywhere.

Is there a solution to this? I'm basically stuck without chrome…

  • I had the same problem. I discovered that I somehow still had AVG anti-virus and its stupid Web scanner still installed (Probably dude to the many system restores I performed) as I am now using Avast. I went and uninstalled both and now Chrome works fine again!

So it may be your AV conflicting programs like Chrome from functioning properly. I would first create an exception for chrome in your AV settings.

    • I use MSE and its not related to AV. It only happens when I sign into Chrome and all the bookmarks and extensions gets synced, then BOOM! And Yes, I've tried with extensions removed but still the same. Never faced anything weird like this before with Chrome and I'm using it since the day it released (September, 2008).

  • Try this

    1. Shut down Chrome through the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del to start Task Manager)
    2. go to the folder C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
    3. Delete the file called 'Web Data'
    4. restart Chrome

It fixed some issues for me so may work you.

  • uninstall/reinstall.

It should all be backed upped anyway

    • Did it more than 10 times, does not work.

  • Try to launch Chrome with extensions disabled? Once you sign in, the rogue extension might get sync'ed and start crashing your installation.

  • Try signing in when you're in an incognito window.

    • Chrome does not work that way, switches to normal chrome when try to login from incognito.

      • I mean open an incognito window - go to gmail.com - sign in there. It shouldn't switch to a non-incognito window. It will amongst other things run with extensions off as suggested by Scotty.

Works for me on Mac & Windows.

        • Well, I won't be getting the sync option of Chrome to use.

        • @bargainaus: No, you won't get sync. But it could help diagnose the issue.

  • I'm done with it. Did all the suggestions posted here, along with Whirlpool posting on adware/trojan removal. Nothing works, the only thing left to do is reformating system drive and do a clean install of Windows. But what about my work PC? Something tells me it is related to syncing chrome, not the OS/System.

  • Don't use chrome, use firefox and import all your bookmarks etc
Then it will work, chrome is totally bug ridden

    • I can't think using anything other than Chrome, gotta get me all those Google goodies.

  • Switched to Firefox, nothing could be done to make Chrome usable. Well, I'll give Chrome another try in few weeks then.

    • Sooooo…..

      you won't be getting sync?

  • +1

Update: Back to Chrome, wiping out google sync account did the trick.

    • So you're good to go again?

I had the same problem, eventually went to Firefox for awhile but could never truly embrace that browswer. Thankfully (??) I had a major corruption on my PC a few weeks later which forced me to restore a previous OS image - Chrome's been perfect ever since! Though I'm curious if your fix would have solved my problem too.

End of the day, if you make regular clones/images of your system the day will come when it's a true life saver (and TIME saver!) I have clones of all my computers on the NAS now. Has come in handy a few times over the years!

      • I cleaned my google sync account and then reinstalled chrome, everything works fine now. I think there might have been a corrupt file (bookmark/history/extension etc), that caused chrome to choke. After fresh install, I imported backed up bookmark.

I used Firefox in the meantime for few weeks and hated it! People say chrome is the memory hog but Firefox would often freeze on me. Chrome is the king, long live the king!

        • From memory I found Firefox used less memory than Chrome but Firefox to me just felt like using a browser from 2010, did the job but a bit clunky and awkward. And that's coming from someone who's main browser for several years was in fact Firefox :)

What you've said has given me an idea, maybe I should do a file backup (in Acronis True Image) of just Google Chrome and it's attached bits and pieces so if this ever happens again I can just restore that nice and quickly. I already do this for a few other things, MS Office and video software I rely heavily on. Rare that it's needed but a godsend when it is. Important obviously to get all the traces of the install to be effective.

About another browser, I'm seriously planning to give MS "Edge" a go when Windows 10 arrives. The replacement for Explorer, early reviews have it blowing Chrome away an many areas. I don't love Chrome, I just think it's the best of the current pick :) So I'm happy to see if Edge is better.

        • @Click_It: when a new version of MS browser comes out, it always blows out all others in benchmark. But usability and simplicity matters most to me and chrome wins for me on these two areas. Beside, I rely heavily on Google services + Android.

  • Reinstall Chrome.
