Bananas $2 KG @ Coles (Excludes WA)

562

Looks like Coles has a special on bananas for $2 Kg spotted in Victoria but it seems to be a National Special (excluding WA).

If it is part of their fruit and veg super specials then the special will go on until thursday

Seems like Woolworths has also followed suit and they have Bananas at $2 Kg as well

So they put the price up 50 cents ?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/191582

Last ones I bought at Coles never ripened? They stayed green and I threw them out after a week.
How long do they keep them in cold storage before they sell them?

    • +3

They? The deal you linked is for woolworths and this is for Coles

      • +2

        Woolies are $2 too…

"Woolworths has also followed suit and they have Bananas at $2 Kg as well"

    • you need to keep them at room temperature for them to ripen, and as far as i know they are kept around 17 degrees in coles storage.

      • you need to keep them at room temperature for them to ripen

it's not the first time I've bought bananas… they are kept in the pantry… but these ones didn't ripen. It's happened before, and always with supermarket ones.

Thats because they artificially ripen then with ethylene

The banana's you bought may have missed the ethylene phase

          probably what happened…

why don't they just include a tank of ethylene in store so you can ripen your own?

You can spot bananas likely to behave like that. They are usually a darker shade of green rather than green-yellow, tend to be smaller, and look like they were harvested too early. They also appear in fruit markets. The vendors know about these and flog them off cheaper.

          You mean like $2/kg ???

        • @jv: Cheaper than the decent ones, that is.

        • @jv: Ripen your own "banana"?

        • @jv: To be honest, I'd love my banana to be ripen before even going in-store.

I bought 1.5kg from my local grocer for $1.99 a few hours ago

    • +2

not all of us have access to a local grocer when these supermarkets are dominating the Australian market

      • +7

most people should have a local grocer in the shopping complex where a coles, woolworths or IGA is

And we should support the smaller local grocers rather than the bigger chain supermarkets

        • +1

hard to keep prices down when the larger chains own the majority of the buying power

        • +6

          @agentsabet:

i tend to disagree. The local grocers around my area are generally cheaper than my local woolies/IGA by at least 30 - 50 cents per kg on most fruit and veggies

        • +1

          @easternculture:
I'de have to agree with that. My problem is my overt laziness in preferring to get it done in one spot instead of saving that $2-3 a shop. Letting OzB down :(

        • +2

The only green grocers I have near me sell low quality fruit/veg or are too expensive.

    • I got 2kg from my local friendly neighbour

  • +2

This is perfect for banana milkshakes.

    • +1

exactly my thought!!! I bought some last night and made a delicious chocolate banana milkshake

      • +10

        chocolate banana

Never seen them before, our local Coles and Woolies only sell Banana flavoured bananas…

        • +1

          Good Humour @jv!

        • +2

Except when they sell rubber flavoured unripeable bananas. :)

  • +1

I buy bananas in bulk then peel , wrap in glad wrap and then freeze them for fruit smoothies . They have to be nice and ripe though .

    • and then freeze them for fruit smoothies .

then go a yucky brown colour when they freeze though..

Bananas shown in photo for scale?

    • Come again?

    • Bananas shown in photo for scale?

How big is your computer monitor?

On mine, they are showing as 4cm…

  • Saw that price at Coles Causuarina last Friday or Saturday but I didn't buy any because I still have plenty of them in the fridge. Too bad, I can no longer find banana flowers for my soup at local produce markets because farmers have to chop down all banana plants to stop spreading diseases.

  • that's bananas!

  • +2

Isn't this sometimes a normal price?

    • +1

No, the price of bananas has been fluctuating between $3-$4 for a few months now.

    • It depends on where you shop. Supermarkets usually $1.50-3. They often come down for 99c/kilo if you shop elsewhere.

  • +1

Does coles do a fresh or free policy like Woolworths?

    • +2

Yes you get a full refund or replacement even if you have consumed the items and bring back the peels

    • -2

Lol - unsure if Coles can have a policy on being "fresh" given that the ACCC fined them A$2.5m on "freshly" baked bread… baked months earlier somewhere in Europe.

  • +15

No wonder they're only $2… they're all bent!

  • I claim this as conspiracy to promote The Minions movie! :p

  • -1

Nationwide? WA stores charge at least $2.90/kg.

    • +1

Yeah, I can confirm $2.90/kg at Coles in Morley Galleria [WA] this morning :(

      • Back up to the usual $4.90/kg this afternoon at both Coles and Woolworths at Warwick Grove (WA), and $3.99 at the fruit and veg shop!

    • +1

Of course they do. Bananas have to come all the way from Carnarvon!

  • Or go to a local market and get them for less than this everyday. Coles and Woolies may be good for most things, but I have found they are a real ripoff for fruit and veg.

    • Fruit+veg prices in places like Melbourne is so much cheaper than Perth

    • my local market is not open till 1am

  • +2

Is that a banana in your pocket I see?

    • +2

Nah mate. Just happy to see you.

  • Buy them directly of the farm is the cheapest way.

    • +1

      Even better: grow your own!

    • +3

Sure let me just pop down to my local Victorian banana farm.

  • +1

Wow, we go bananas over bananas.

    • +3

I'm going apeshit over this deal

  • +3

Aldi has them for $1.99/kg, too so I cannot see a deal here. In fact Aldi has it at that price quite often.

    • +3

      It's cheap because Aldi's a front :P.

      • So as per Dominics comment i guess the buyers from Coles/Woolies stocked up on Bananas hoping for a special ;) windfall

  • no joy for wa again…sigh….

  • Is this a deal?

  • Did anyone see the $2 special in a Sydney Coles store ?
I have a feeling my local Coles will still be $3.90.
Because its not on the NSW fresh food specials
    http://www.coles.com.au/catalogues-and-specials/this-weeks-f…

    • Wasn't on the Victorian one either, but Coles Online says $2Kg for NSW Postcodes.

    • It was $2.5 @ Coles Wynyard and $3.98 at Woolworths Met center.

  • Just a reminder for WA: remember Cyclone Olwyn went through Carnarvon just under two months ago.
