these mechanical timer make noise… can't really sleep with these ON,,

    • I know, they are really annoying….and if you have a power cut, they lose track of time and then need adjusting.

I bought a digital one a few years ago from Aldi - cost $10, and you can set 10 different on/off sequences and it will keep track of time even if power goes out as it has an internal battery.

      • Yeah I don't use them anywhere near a bed room. Great for outdoor pumps and general use when you aren't home. 2 packs usually cost around $9 from bunnings so this is actually a good deal. Just know the pros and cons.

      • Have you ever used one near your bed? They do have a high pitch squeak.

        • Yours must have been faulty - it happens with all products.

        You said traffic twice..

  • Quick question from my phone… I always assumed the Eneloop mobile charger took Eneloop batteries but is that correct or does it have is own built in supply?

It's just a standard powerbank with its own built in battery.

      • That's a shame. I'd rather it took Eneloop AA, plenty here to use :)

    • Description states in has an inbuilt 2,650 mAh lithium ion battery.

Use of the Eneloop name is quite misleading, eh?

      • Well yeah, nothing really Eneloop about it, internals could be anything. Was going to buy 2 but I'll pass.

Wonder why they never made an AA version, something to do with 1.2v I guess.

something to do with 1.2v I guess

Nope, both 2 x AA (2.4V) and Lithium (3.7V) need a "Buck Boost" voltage stepup converter to output the required 5V

It's to do with the overall power density of NiMH vs Lithium

I just did some quick calcs and I reckon that 2 x AA Eneloops (say 4000mAh total at 1.2V) would end up being about 865mAh at 5V after conversion losses of 90%.

Based on that, you'd need to use 6 x AA Eneloops to get the 2500mAh needed to charge a typical smart phone - significantly larger and heaver than this Panasonic thingy (which is not a particularly small unit anyway)!

Consider the size of a pack to suit even 2 x Eneloops compared to a Xiaomi 5000mAh slim lithium pack like this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/187688 - that is 6 times the capacity in a far smaller package!

        • @llama:

Damn, well answered! I wonder no more.

        • I made a typo in the post above…

I just did some quick calcs and I reckon that 2 x AA Eneloops (say 4000mAh total at 1.2V) would end up being about 865mAh at 5V after conversion losses of 90%

          Should say…

… would end up being about 865mAh at 5V after conversion EFFICIENCY of 90%

      • for what it's worth, according to the packaging - battery made in japan. rest of the item made in china

  • The HPM 24 Hour Easy Set Timer is ideal…

I love the clever marketing of "old tech" as an product selling feature/advantage.

And even as a self-confessed gadgetoholic, after many many years of battling with all manner digital products I must say that there's a lot to be said for something quick and easy like these kinds of timers.

Thank heavens the recent era (what's it been, 1980 till 2010?) of "press button volume controls" is almost ended - at least until the next time some idiot designer thinks it's a good idea.

  • There's a digital timer (http://www.dicksmith.com.au/hpm-7-day-digital-timer-dsau-m65…). What do people think of that?
