Seat allocation on Jetstar flight to Tokyo

Hello OZB'ers,

Flying to Tokyo in a week. There will be 4 of us. I haven't pre paid for the seats when I made the booking. Do you think they will allocate all 4 of us together or will they random sit us in different sections based on the available seats at the time of check in? I am aware that it is only $7.50 per person per sector but it is $60 all up for the return flight for the 4 of us which is a bit of Ramen and food spending money while we are there.

If anyone can please share their thoughts and experiences regarding this, then I will make a choice.

Thanks in advance.

is all four of you in the same booking?
if so then very likely they will allocate you sitting together (not guaranteed as it is subject to availability, if all people all the flight pre-purchase seats and ends up with single seats left then you will have no choice)
I cannot recall if checking in online for a international jetstar flight will allow you to select seats or not..

    • Yes, all 4 of us are in the same booking. And web check in available from 48 hours before the flight but I am not sure if we can select the seats for free.

      • i know domestic jetstar flight they won't allow you to select seats, and they will allocate it for you. In most cases they will allocate people to sit together in the same booking.
I cannot recall for international flight if they allow you to select seats when you check in online but i think they do

do remember to check in online and dont wait until you get to airport coz it will be too late

      • from sometimes in this April no free seat selection on International Flight.
They seems to get more money.

    Get to the airport early.
Not everyone books seats, for the same reasons you haven't.

People at the back of the queue are less likely to be seated together.
    Be at the front.

    • Thanks. If I cannot select the seats for free when the web check in is open 48 hours before the flight, we will make sure we will go early to the airport for check in.

If you do an airport check in, it will mean that everyone who has done the web check in in the preceding 46 hours has already been assigned a seat, thus making your chance of getting 4 seats together pretty slim.

When checking in online in the past, I got spaced apart sometimes, but together others (just two people), so it varies depending on what's available at the moment/what the system can give you. Now, there's no saying you can't try to move around if there are empty seats, but if you don't reserve a seat, it's a gamble.

In the end it comes down to how important it is for you guys to sit together. :P It's just a plane flight..I sleep through most of mine.

    • Will be good to all sit together or at least 2 rows of 2 seats each. 2 rows of 2 seats each is looking very unlikely as of now as majority of them are already taken but a row of 4 will be just fine for us.

You can get an idea by logging on to the jetstar site and going thru the motions to book a seat online. You will get an idea of the availability of 4 seats together. However dont forget if you are flying on the dreamliner the seats are 3 3 3 so you will be split at least by the aisle.

If there are plenty of seats 24 hours before you fly, then your chances are good, if there aren't then you will need to be at the front of the checkin line. The fastest way to get to the front is if you have a traveller who is qantas club member or Silver or higher, you can checkin at the business class line, faster. Or if not then checkin online 24 hours beforehand. If that doent allocate your seat, (I never used it), it does have shorter lines at checkin.

    • We are not flying the dreamliner. We will be flying in the A330. so, it is the pattern of 2 4 2. I had a look at the available seats already. Majority of the rows with 2 seats are already taken. They have at least 12 rows of 4 seats together available as of now and we fly in less than a week.

I will definitely have a look to see if we can select seats for free when web check in opens 48 hours before the flight, otherwise depending on how busy the flight is, I will pay for the seats or get to the airport earlier.

If you get to the airport within plenty of time ask at the checkin desk to make sure you are all together.

I have flown with three mates to Japan and for me it would absolutely be worth it to pay to sit together.

Just check in online (48 hrs before flight) to allocate your seats free of charge. You can still drop your luggage at the airport.

Just ask nicely at the airport. They move people around all the time if they need to.

Only the people who paid for a seat will not be moved.

Generally if you're on the same booking they'll seat you together anyway.

  • UPDATE: I web checked in 48 hours before the flight but still can't select the seats for free for International flights. But I have just logged in again double check but I can now see that they have allocated all 4 of us in the same row. Hopefully they won't change them anymore. Cheers.
