Best debit and credit card combo for overseas travel

Hi All

I am travelling to Japan and Hawaii in a couple of weeks and wanted to find out what is the best credit card / debit card combo to carry.

I have done a search and have heard that the Citibank Plus debit card is best for cash, and I currently hold a 28 degree card for credit.

Is this a good choice?

Thanks

Used the Citibank Plus card for my recent America trip.

Was really dissatisfied as 80% of Citibank ATMs in the areas we travelled gave an error code that said:

ERROR 100001: Card not acceptable. Please contact the issuer.

Turned out at the time there was some form of compatibility issue with Citibank ATMs in the USA and Australian issued cards. Ended up paying ATM fees at every transaction as we were unable to use Citibank ATMs.

I hope your luck is better.

You should contact Citibank and ask for compensation if there was an internal issue at the time of your trip.

    Yep that's the one.

Make sure you save the pdf of all the ATM locations to your phone just in case (if you plan on using the ATMs outside of the airport).

Citibank Plus debit card is a lock for the debit.

28 Degrees and Bankwest Zero Platinum are popular for the credit as both have no foreign transaction fees. I had the 28 Degrees but changed to the Bankwest for the complimentary travel insurance.

We couldn't find any Citibank ATMs outside Honolulu when we were there a few weeks ago, nor any ATMs from other banks that were fee-free. Ended up paying $3-$4 ATM fee each time we took money out. If you're staying outside the big city, try and get as much cash as you can in Honolulu, and pay for the rest on card.

That said, it's still easily the best debit card. The exchange rate that is used is excellent.

Currently using it to withdraw cash and deposit into our new Canadian bank account, as we are here for 2 years. So much cheaper than interbank transfers or those currency agencies (bloody daylight robbery). TD Bank has free withdrawal for Citibank cards in Canada.
