Transporting TV Interstate

Not quite two years ago - August '13 - my partner and I invested in a good Samsung home entertainment system including a $2000 Samsung TV (TV retailed for about $3200, got it on an OzBargain deal/recommendation). In her infinite wisdom she got rid of the boxes thinking we would never move away from her home. It turns out we're moving in less than a month because her employer has transferred her to Brisbane.

So, my question, OzBargainers…. What do I do? Do I transport the TV to Brisbane and if so how (no original boxes)? If not, do I sell it and is there anyway of finding out how much I could reasonably sell it for?

My worry of something happening to the TV are exceedingly high. Although the TV itself is under warranty would I be correct in suggesting that if it broke while being transported from Melbourne to Brisbane I'd be out of luck?

  • No warranty if broken.

Are you moving yourselves, or using a removalist?

If it were me, and I was doing it myself, I'd be raiding the bin at HN or similar for a fridge box, which will also come with some thin sheets of polystrene that you could cut down to cover the screen. Then I'd use some blankets to wrap the TV well before covering with the cardboard. You could use packaging tape to secure this, but some of that strapping stuff they use on cartons would be a lot quicker and easier. I think you can buy it fairly cheaply, along with the clips.

    • +1. Boxes shouldn't be too hard to find. Just ask at the nearest place that sells TVs.

Yeah that tv is not worth $2000. You can easily pick up a new 50 inch tv for around $700. Worth considering selling it then picking up a new one at the other end

I agree with this. Sell it and buy a new one where you are headed. Less hassle and headaches worrying did I pack it well enough so it dont break.

      • I'm actually astounded that he managed to pay $2000 for a 50 inch in 2013. I got a 64 inch Samsung plasma for $1500 at the same time. And he calls himself an ozbargainer.

The model that I purchased was top of the line - other places were selling it for a little over $4000. It was posted here and made the front page with A LOT of +'s.

          @Wickzki49: sure sure

        • @thorton82: why would I lie about my own TV?

Search the site if you like.

        • @Wickzki49: Nah, that's alright, believe what you want.

        • @thorton82:

I know what I bought and I know that I got a good deal. My job is somewhat related to the TV industry so I know what I'm purchasing. You, on the other hand, have taken this thread off topic far enough but that's something you have a history of doing both here and on your other forums.

@Wickzki49: No need to have a sook, mind you I'f i'd dropped $1000 more than I had to on a TV, I'd probably be pretty cranky too.

Lol at selling it. Use a comfortable amount of blankets and you are all set.

    • There is a cost for transporting things, not just in money but also in time stress and hassle. IMO the more stuff you can sell the better. Then get some bargains at the other end.

People complain about the stress and difficulty of moving. I moved into my current place one Friday night after work, although I did clean and purge a lot of stuff in the week beforehand. I had one small car load of clothes and belongings then I borrowed a ute and a mate to collect some furnishings bought on Gumtree.

It's easy to buy stuff. I furnished my apartment for under $1000 including bed, fridge, washer, lounge and dining suite.

Me too but I think I spent less than 500$! All items are either refurbished electronics, used items on Gumtree, or bought from recycle center.

And ensure you transport it upright!
