Limits to Energy/Gas Switching Supplier Deals

So my energy/gas contract was up for renewal, and I started checking to see if the offer they were giving was still good. Currently with AGL on a special package through work, noticed that Origin energy were offering basically the same deal and between them they were the cheapest options.

The only difference between the two offers (price / terms / etc) was that Origin had a 'switch your energy/gas and get free month' deal which I could take up and save $80ish. Noting AGL have a similar offer for new customers, I gave them a call to see if they'd match Origin's offer. I was polite, and it was my birthday, so I figured they might be nice - but no deal; they said they'd only give the offer to new customers, and not to existing customers even if that meant they'd leave.

So I guess it's over to Origin, then.

But this got me thinking… what's to stop me switching back to AGL in a year and getting some discount then? Or, given there aren't any termination fees on either contract, what's to stop people just switching back and forth between suppliers multiple times per year to grab offers like that? I couldn't see anything obvious in the terms and conditions, but wondering if there's something I'm missing?

  • I am looking for the Electricity and Gas options too as I am moving from rented to own house.

I am currently with Powershop for Electricity and AGL for Gas (12% disc earlier. Now willing to give 18%, plus 50$ cash).

Most of my friends are surprised with low power bill i get. (2 bed and bath unit), 1 small fridge, 1 microwave oven, TV in feb 2015, Washing Machine (Apr, 2014), Dryer (Jan 2015), 2 Electric heaters, switched to those bright glowing bulbs. When I check back, I have got a bill of $690 for 8 months. Apprx about 87$ per month.

Gas average of 52$ for 2 months. My hot water is with different service provider (unit has a common heater and bill shared).(14feb - 20 april 2015 bill was 130$) We use Gas cooking.

I am planning to switch Gas to Origin as you suggested. What do you guys suggest?

  • once you start a transfer you will probably receive a marketing call from agl

    • Question, if I use that referral can I also double dip and get some Qantas FF points via iSelect?

      • Probably not.
You only get 1500 points for an energy sign-up through iSelect - I would say the $75 credit through a referral is worth much more.

  • Hi sparkanum. If your contract is up for renewal you are more than welcome to take advantage of the current discounts that new customers can access. Please DM me if you'd like more information.
