Cheapest Unpopular Meat Cuts in Brisbane

Hi all,

I'm looking for tough/unpopular meat cuts in Brisbane. Such as:

  • Pork/Lamb/Beef shoulder
  • Pork/Lamb/Beef shin/shank
  • Ox tail
  • Beef tongue
  • Beef/Pork cheek
  • Beef mince ("quality" doesn't really matter)
  • Bones and other assorted scraps
  • Anything else that's cheap

I like cooking the tougher, more flavourful cuts. And I like making my own stocks.

Does anyone have a line on the absolute cheapest place in Brisbane to get any of these meats? I'm thinking Asian (or other ethnic) butchers in poorer suburbs. But I wouldn't know where to start looking.

EDIT: an example of some prices I'm looking to beat…

  • Butcher at Mt Ommaney shops has bags of bones between 1.5kg and 3kg for $3 per bag
  • Woolies has pork shoulder (skin on, bone out) for around $7 per kg
  • Coles beef mince has become pricey - $7/kg
  • Beef shoulder (blade) is $11/kg or more at Coles and Hillman's meats at Sumner Park

It must be possible to beat (the crap out of) these prices! Brisbanites, post your cheap meat prices, and the name of the butcher!

    IGA here fairly regularly has whole rumps for around $6kg. We sometimes buy one to turn into mince.
