last season Macs

Hey guys,

I've had enough of Windows, and i think im ready for the jump to Apple. (my love for my new Iphone is partially fueling this!!!)

I've read and heard that Apple has recently released a new line of computers and their old models have been selling at a discount.

Being a mircosoft user, im totally useless when it comes to Apple products…. Could anyone please advise what products of theirs i should be looking at?

any advise would be greatly appreciated!

  • G'day,

Firstly you need to distinguish between "Windows" being an operating system, and Apple being a manufacturer of computers and an operating system.

You can, if you need to, run Windows OS and Microsoft Win compatible apps on a Mac Computer, but you can't (legally run MacOS on a PC).

Have a look at the link:
    http://www.apple.com/au/getamac/whichmac/
and you will get some idea of the current offerings.

You have desktops, MacBooks (entry level), MacBook Pros or even Towers to select from.

Sure, the previous models are discounted, but if you are looking at the entry level MacBook, the discounting has to be weighed against the new features and longer battery life etc.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say you are a Microsoft user… if you are talking about licensed software that you already have, such as (Windows based) Office, it won't run on your new Mac unless you run it under emulation. There are cheap alternatives for the Mac like OpenOffice etc.

So, consider it you want that or add on the cost of Mac compatible software eg. Office 2008 for the Mac, and make enough allowance for enough RAM to run it all.

Also, if you have other items (apart from your iPod) e.g. Printer, Scanner etc. are they Mac compatible? Some printers are not, even if they are USB.

    Have a look at:
    http://www.buymac.com.au/store/other/clearance
    or
    http://www.buymac.com.au/store/apple-hardware/macbook-pro-xm…

  • iMac is probably what you'd be looking at
    http://store.apple.com/au/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/imac
The new iMacs are definitely worth looking at though. They had big improvements

or MacBook for an Apple Laptop.
(currently no old models in the Apple Store)
Arguably, the older Macbooks are preferable to the newer ones..

Macs can run Windows too either in a Virtual machine (ie a program in MacOS) or by rebooting and running natively (called BootCamp).

If buying from Apple, don't spec up your RAM or Hard Drive.. it is much cheaper and is quite easy to do yourself.

If you own MS Office, Microsoft can and do offer an exchange from the Windows copy to a Mac copy for marginal cost.

Most printers are in fact compatible nowadays, there are also usually hacks to make "incompatible" printers work.. Just use Google "Printer Name and Mac Driver"
