AirAsia Overcharged with PayPal by Double!

I was booking a flight from AirAsia from Tokyo to Bangkok at 14,555 JPY (for Sept 1st) not including the processing fees. I saw that it was good so I switched it to Aust dollars and selected to pay by PayPal and the processing fee is $1.65 bringing the total price to $160.47. I clicked the submit button and I was taken to the PayPal site and entered my password and submitted the payment, however right after making the payment I noticed that the price at PayPal website says $309.71! I double checked my paypal history its exactly $309.71 not $160.47. man… I feel so cheated….. it breaks my heart…

I have emailed AirAsia and have not heard back yet and paypal wont let me open a dispute unless its an unauthorised purchase. Is there anything else I can do to get a refund or something?

Edit #2:

Airasia have replied to my email that i'd get my refund in about 30 days and to check my cc/bank after 30 days. I don't know if I will receive the refund through paypal, i dont think they have my cc/bank details.. You can view the news of the double charge error by PayPal here http://www.itnews.com.au/News/404273,aussie-customers-double… (thanks hastagbargain) or at paypal's facebook page https://www.facebook.com/paypalau?fref=ts

I'm going to call AA and PayPal in the morning to confirm. I hope that I'll get refunded the full $309. I suggest anybody else with this problem to give PayPal a call to ensure that you will be refunded the difference.

Did you add on baggage and insurance? The price is normally only for the seats.

  • I didnt add baggage or insurance. I also didnt pick my seat or add any meal.

My airasia account confirmed that I paid 14,705.00 JPY.

The only way is to get in touch with Air Asia directly. Paypal can't do anything because the charge put through from AA to Paypal is AUD309.71 which you had approved.

  • Ok thanks. I will give them a call.

I've just encountered a very similar problem as you. Booked a airasia flight from osaka to kuala lumpur and they charged me 330 instead of 180. I called AirAsia and they confirmed to me that they had only charged me for 180 and suggested that I should give paypal a call. Please update me with your situation once you call them!

    • Was the flight you booked on a discount? I am thinking its a possibly that airasia haven't updated the discount to PayPal.

      • yeah probably. Did you get your refund?

        • I haven't time to call yet. I will try tonight. Check hashtagbargain's post below… Its a PayPal error. Gotta contact PayPal.

PayPal increased their fees to 100%?
Probably not that far from reality.

  • At the outset I am very slack when it comes to reconciling my banking and paypal statements.

I recently took up this offer from Winemarket & paid by Paypal.

The deal was for $63.20 + $8 delivery. On the Paypal confirmation at checkout I saw only $63.20, thought no more of it and clicked OK. That was a week ago.

Yesterday I get an email from Paypal showing a billing of $71.20 from Winemarket. Checked and sure enough, one payment at $63.20 and the other for $71.20 for the same purchase. Little bit of messing about and it was quickly fixed.

Curiosity aroused I went back through my Paypal account and found two other "double dips" in the last three months. Both were for small amounts ($6.50 and $12.00). One was easy to sort out. Waiting on a response about the other.

I must become more diligent and learn to trust no one.

  • I doubt that you will get the full $309 refunded. I assume that it is only the excess that you will be refunded. If they refund you the whole amount and that particular airfare is no longer available, then most people would be unhappy about that!
