NBN Installation Box Location

Hi,

I am getting the NBN installed soon and wondering where have people got their box installed?

I would like it upstairs and wondering if there is additional costs or not recommended?

Its pretty ugly and I want it out of sight lol

Thanks.

The NBN box is usually in the garage. You could spend a little more to get your home builder to install a nice enclosure box that looks like this.

Since it's unsightly, all the more reason to keep it hidden in the garage.

I always thought it should be in the house?

My house is an existing one, dont you need to connect the modem and phone through it?

The NBN box which comprises of the NTD and usually a backup battery unit so it's rather bulky. Do you really want it in your house?

Does your house have existing conduit/cabling for the modem and phone? Otherwise it will be messy. In mine, I had the builder install 2 x CAT5E (high speed) cabling with wall sockets from my study to the garage. My router is placed in my study (for better Wifi range) and is plugged to the wall LAN socket which connects to the NBN box in my garage.

As comparison, My neighbour had his router in his garage together with his NBN box and connected to a patch panel which has LAN cabling connecting to each room in his house.

They typically install it at the closest point inside your house to where the conduit from the street/aerial cable runs to.

Talk to your ISP, they should be able to give you advice on how to deal with NBN. There have been instances of it being above people's beds etc, with flashing lights that don't really help you sleep. Telstra gives quite a bit of advice to customers on how to have the NTD placement discussion with NBN.

I think the worst thing you can do is sign off on the work if you're unhappy with it. Once you have, you've basically signed off that the work is completed to a satisfactory standard and the ability to negotiate isn't as good. But best bet is talk to your ISP - they'll know the right things to say and be able to advise you of your rights.

Call this company and ask for Glenn. (i think he is the one usually answering the phones) 1300 728 884 or (03) 9436 4566

You don't need to sign up with them, but he is pretty good with NBN info and I am pretty sure he could answer your question.

You're lucky, I wish I could get the NBN at my place.

    • Thanks will do.

NBN plans are pretty expensive though! Only because of TPG's new plans I decided to make the change, as I was under adsl2 with 18mbps which is pretty good.
