Does it end up cheaper buying it on the Wii VC and then upgrading to the Wii U version?

I have 200 points remaining and cannot buy anything without purchasing another lot of Wii points. From memory, $15 was the lowest card available.

It does, but if the N64 VC titles are 1000 points (please correct me, I don't have access to a system to double check) and 1000 points costs $10 exactly (again please correct me) - it would end up cheaper to buy the Wii version and then upgrade it via the Wii U discount pricing.
If you had Paper Mario on the Wii Virtual Console, the upgrade price for it on the Wii U VC is $2.60.
The unfortunate thing is you can't seem to move save files from the Wii VC to the Wii U VC even if the titles are the same :(
