To (ASUS) T100 or Not to T100 That Is The Question...

Hey gang,

My question: Is it too late to consider buying a T100 even if it is only $279?
With Windows 10 (and new iPads and new Windows Phones etc) on the way, should I just keep waiting or..just…grab this now for 'fun' at this super low price?
For the record..I jumped in on the Telstra Free Galaxy S 10.5 Tablet and I am selling it now (Not an Android fan. The tablet was my experiment and it confirmed my assumptions) so I expect I'll be getting about $200 profit from that when the auction ends today

The story:
One of the benefits to working around the corner from one of the best Cash Converters on the planet (Fortitude Valley, QLD) is that I get to see some great pricing on used and new gear.
One of the downsides is…I get to see some great pricing on used and new gear that tempt me into spending what I shouldn't.

Anywhoo since joining this here community, I have noticed the raves for the ASUS T100.
At the moment Cashie's have one for a mere $279..(90 Day Warranty).
As I've stated on other threads, I've got an old Compaq laptop that works but is showing it's age. Same with my old iPad 2.(They've got an open box 16GB iPad air 2 for a mere 445 or so too…)

I don't game anymore. I mainly surf the web and all my important docs photos etc are sitting on a WD Mycloud NAS with the most important stuff sitting in OneDrive.
I suspect this little device would stream HD MKV files fine and that there are apps (Like Plex etc) that will allow me to push content from the NAS to my kinda-old smart TV. (Panasonic ST50).

Thoughts?

  • is that for the 32 gig or 64 gig model ?

  • 64 GB

I would wait for something better tbh.

Having owned the t100, it doesn't live upto it's reputation.

I found it to be a slow machine with a pixelated screen and a bad trackpad.

I reckon you should consider a chromebook. Most of your requirements seem to be web-based and these computers are more reliable and cheap!

If you are really keen to get the most out of Windows 10, consider a tablet like the Nokia N1/Surface/Surface Pro series.

Just my thoughts, nice profit on the tab s too!

Nokia N1 is an android tablet. Just saying.

Other than that, I generally agree with what you've said. Though Surface Pro series should not be looked at as a tablet (they are far too heavy), rather a hybrid of tablet and laptop. It has its benefits, they do synergise, but if you don't use both functions, it's usually better to get a proper tablet (lighter and longer battery) or a proper laptop (clamshell design does put the weight on the keyboard, which makes it much more suitable for typing longer and on lap imo).

Surface 3, however, is more like a tablet imo. It uses Cherry Trail CPU, successor of Bay Trail CPU. It is fanless and even though it's lacks that umph compared to SP3, it's portable. Though the price is ridiculously high, I'd probably wait till it falls down to $500 region.

I personally dislike T100, it's a budget device, I'd probably spend little bit more to get something that's better in build quality. I personally like Pavilion X2 over T100, but Pavilion X2 does seem to have DOA issues, though the price difference might be too much for many people.

        • Yeah I agree. No point going budget unless that's all you can afford.

N1 looks like a great tablet, pity you have to import it.

A surface pro 3 on special when the pro 4 comes out would be great I reckon. That's what I'm thinking of doing anyway haha

Haven't heard much about the pavilion but Hp are pretty reputable. Mate got a t100 doa so happens to most tech these days.

  • thanks for that advice. It validated my assumptions.

    • By the way, is your reason for selling Tab S 10.5 the stutters in the home screen and such?
Since you've sold it, I guess it doesn't really make that much difference, but Magazine UX is very resource demanding.
I got Nova Launcher and it got rid of the stutters a bit. Lollipop upgrade I've heard makes the performance better as well.

      • I sold it because it didn't do what I had hoped it would as compared to an iOS device.

I was hoping an android device with my chrome cast would allow me more than what I could get with my old iPad 2.

It's a great piece of gear but I personally found the benefits too minor to have to re learn another OS.

Happy to provide specifics if you want but I'm typing this on my old iPad and iOS 8 makes typing in chrome a painfully slow affair….

Can give the full story if interested later from my PC.
