Can I get anything from broken UPS?

Hi all,

Got two UPS which broke down a while ago in shop. Any idea if I can sell them to scrap shop for anything? They're pretty heavy too, thought worth checking. Don't really wanna put them straight into bin.

One is Powershield 1200, the other one is Eaton 9130. Think it cost us almost $3k to buy them both years ago.

Cheers

  • The weight mostly comes from the lead acid batteries inside, so not really worth much in scrap sorry. How old roughly are they and what are they doing/not doing?

You might have some luck sticking them on gumtree (just make sure you emphasise that they're dead) as people are usually more than happy to grab something like that for cheap and see if they can get it going again.

    • Well basically it just doesn't turn on anymore, probably only about 5 years (waste of money if you ask me, but rule says we must have them)

Just wanna be a responsible citizen, not dumping batteries anywhere. You're right, might put on gumtree to see if anyone would like it?

No copper in there worth salvaging though?

      • If you haven't already you could probably have a look to see if the fuses/breakers are OK or bust it open to see if anything's burnt or exploded, however by now the batteries are probably shagged if it's been off for a long period of time so up to you if you want to have a lookie.

If you want to get rid of them then yeah gumtree should do the trick, save lugging them a recycler, lead batteries only seem to fetch about $0.50/kg according to Dr Google. Not much copper in them at all unfortunately.

  • Try here ?

    • Thanks, didn't think of them. If no offers from gumtree, I'll just drop them there

opened it up, just full of dust lol….

  • Don't the expensive ones have line conditioning and surge protection? They may not store power but they should still condition if They power up. Disconnect the buzzer

    • Yea it has surge protection, but not sure what is line conditioning. What is the buzzer?

      • Usually expensive ups is connected to expensive equipment. In addition to supplyingtempory seconday power, they make the electricity "clean". They contain expensive circuits to protect from mains power variations. That's line conditioning.

When the sla batteries come end of life, the ups will always sound an annoying buzz - indicates that it's a great time to replace those lead batteries so secondary power can be maintained.

Lastly, expensive ups batteries will last at least 10 years. Depends on how often they were used during a power failure. Sometimes it's also possible to rejuvenate the "dead" batteries by de calcifying the cells. It may only be one battery that has failed, causing the whole ups to error up.
