Sydney accomodation.

Hi all,

I'm looking at accommodation in Sydney now for September, won't have a car, will be there during Mon – > Friday to keep costs low.

Plans are as discussed in the thread, probably some public transit usage and go to Bondi via bus / train. Go to Manly via the Ferry, check out the Opera house / the Pylon climb and some general waltzing around Sydney CBD (which I admit, is complicated and not like Melbourne)

Any thoughts on which region you would stay in, if in Sydney?
I was looking at near Hyde Park and or to the left (West) of it – would this be extremely dumb? Somewhere within 1km of that.

Thoughts? What do I need to know.
Thus far we're looking to keep 4 nights, under $800 with all fees, wifi, the lot. Found a couple in the 5 and 600 range but google comments were not ideal.

  • Hi,
    I have previously stayed at:
    Castlereagh Boutique Hotel
    http://www.thecastlereagh.com.au/
and location wise, it might be just what you are after.

I had a look on HotelsCombined.com for you as far as prices
and you have Standard Double w/Wifi (all in) for $585 for 7 Sept for 4 Days
or $587 from 14 Sept etc.

    Check it out.

    Hey Ham Whisperer,

Where you want to stay will depend on what you want to do and although Hyde Park ( or the Cbd) might sounds like a tactical area as its central, i don't think its your best option.

Staying around Hyde Park will be convenient for things like the checking out the Cbd but it will be more expensive for eating out. I certainly wouldn't advise staying there.

I'm of the opinion that the less money spent on accommodation the better as quite often very little time is spent there. I would prefer to save the money on accommodation and spend the savings on a nicer dinner for example. There are literally hundreds ( if not thousands) of cool places around sydney to get good food and do cool stuff.

    Accomodation:
I would suggest staying in Surry hills. Its close to central, its close to the Cbd. Getting to Bondi is Easy as there is a Bus from Central. Getting To the Opera house is one train of only a few stops.
Getting to Manly will require you to take the train to Circular Quay, which again is only a few stops from central.

See if you can find something you like in Surry hills on airbnb. Below for example is $100 a night, leaving you with much extra cash for the rest of the stuff you want to do.

Also, i made a quick Itinerary for you:
Day 1: Catch the Train in the morning to Circular Quay check out the opera house and bridge in one day. The train leaves you about 2 minutes walk from the opera house and the Bridge is about 30 minutes walk from the opera house. Assuming you taken your time, you will probably want some lunch around the Rocks Area. I would recommend the Glenmore Hotel. I've never eaten there myself, but the view from their rooftop bar is an unobstructed view of the Opera house and on a nice day would be hard to beat.
Finish the Afternoon with a "General Waltz around the city'
Day 2: Take the bus to Bondi Beach. You can get a train but it only goes to Bondi Junction ( about 3 km from the beach) and you'll end up getting on a bus anyway.
I'd check out Urbanspoon for some cool places to eat in Bondi as there are Many, Many trendy places to eat around there that will serve an awesome breakfast)
Walk from Bondi to Bronte. That is an activity in itself and will talk the better part of 2 hours.
    Day 3:Manly
Day 4: Watson's Bay. get yourself on a ferry to Watson's Bay and go for a nice ( <30 mins) walk around the south head of the harbour. Nice views and a lovely walk on a nice day. There are also two nice beaches around there if you are brave enough to swim in the cold ( Camp cove & Lady Rose Beach)

If you have any other things that you wanted to do whilst in Sydney, let me know and i can advise. I love to hear of people having a good time in Sydney :)

    Sorry for the long post

    • I am coming back to this to read it soon, I have a lot on - but I really appreciate the response.

  • Perhaps something like this would be suitable; $99/night - http://www.scoopon.com.au/deals/65900/save-up-to-71-at-this-…

    • The position of that hotel is right near central station - a good location for getting around as its right near both buses and trains to everywhere Op wants to go.

The price seems good also. Would want to make sure the specific dates that OP wants are available to be used in conjunction with the voucher.

  • I'm staying at Aarons in China Town in August, never stayed there and the reviews are mixed but the location seems great. From memory I booked it as a special and got it for $100-110 per night. It's only 3 star, but all I need is a roof over my head, and it's only a 5-10 minute walk from central station. Plenty of restaurants around there too.

Not sure if that might be something suitable for you or not?
