Spam from Citibank (?)

Hey guys, I got a Citibank credit card a few months back using the no annual fee offer. Since then I kept getting calls from a number 80733390.

Each time they would confirm some of my account info and then proceed to offer me some deal (e.g. balance transfers). I didn't like being spammed so I then contacted Citibank directly, who then claimed that number is not from Citibank! But if that is so, how does the caller get my account info?

I tried to google the number and it seems that quite a few people have had calls from that number. Some even claimed the deals offered and turned out to be legit!

So my questions…

  • Anyone else here with Citibank accounts that had calls from that number (80733390)?
  • Have you claimed anything offered by them through the phone? If so, did it turn out to be legit or scam?
  • Is Citibank lying to me in saying that number is not theirs?

Thanks.

  • This thread seems to confirm it's Citibank http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/0280733390

Even if it is and you were interested in what they were offering, it would be better for your own ID security to take down their details and call Citibank yourself.

I have had Citibank spam calls before, but my mobile history shows a different number.

aren't there settings in your citibank online account for marketing preferences?

in general i would not supply/confirm any personal information over the phone. anyone could be calling to glean additional information that they might not already have.

  • Have that number blocked on my phone and also 02 91199739. They are a marketing company engaged by Citibank to sell extra products, usually insurance.

It annoys me they don't leave a message, just continue to call, then when you answer they start asking me to confirm who I am… GTFO, that's not how it works these days!

The fee free credit card is a decent deal, its just the insurance sales that ruin my thoughts of Citibank

  • I get calls from them all the time as well. I have the number blocked on my handset, but they keep going through to my voicemail and leaving messages of either a fraction of a second, or a longer message of background call centre noise.

I need to find the options in my account to stop them calling me.

  • When they call say you are busy right now and not to call you again. Also ask how they got your details.

The other thing you can do is call Citibank and make sure you aren't signed up for any marketing program.

Claiming you are overseas and it's 2am has helped me with those sort of calls before.

  • Thanks for the responses guys. I did opt out from marketing communications but I still seem to get these calls.

Each call would start with the other person telling me what my credit balance is and some other info that only I would know. I hated how Citibank denies that it is their number. It almost made me think that my credit card got hacked.

They have some good offers like the no fee card and the plus account, if only their service could be better.

    • I'd change your internet banking password just in case.

I'd call citibank next time you get a call, ask to speak to the manager and explain what is going on…

    • this is what my preferences look like:

OK to Call - You will not receive any service and marketing related calls
OK to Mail - You will not receive any service and marketing related mail
OK to Email - You will not receive emails
OK to SMS - You will not receive any service and marketing related calls

i haven't heard a peep from citibank regarding anything other account-related info and statements by email

double check they all say you won't be contacted

  • Citibank may not be lying that it's not their number, but it probably is a company contracted /by/ Citibank.

I used to get these calls a while ago, but nothing recently. I'd suggest firmly asking to be removed from their database. If you continue to receive calls after requesting this, you can make a complaint to ACMA. See: http://www.acma.gov.au/webwr/_assets/main/lib310037/is124_dn…

  • I started receiving offers from HSBC after the citibank no annual fee offer. Read the fine print and it turned out VedaScore shared my details with their partners.
Did you do the VedaScore band thingy when applying for citibank cc?
They do have an Opt out function on their website.

  • I actually got a call from that exact same number last week. It was someone from Citibank following up on an offer I was sent in the mail for a credit limit increase on my CC.

They had all my correct details and never asked me for my full security answers, just things like "Please tell me just the month of your birthday" or "What is the first letter of your mother's maiden name?" and it all checked out.

I accepted the offer of the credit limit increase and they said they would send a letter to confirm (which they did 2 days later), and my credit limit was increased by the stated amount. So it was all legit for me.

They did try to offer me an offer for a personal loan as well at the end which I declined.

Not sure why Citibank would claim the number isn't theirs when it is though. That's really strange.

  • Under financial services regulations if you specifically tell Citibank that you do not want marketing calls and they continue, they can be fined (or something to that effect… my sister was in banking). Take it up with the Financial Ombudsman

  • I had a missed call from this number today and i forgot to look it up before seeing this. I only have their visa debit card. Time to check the settings and preferences.
