Soccer (in Australia) is a funny code, huge fan base when their team is winning and nowhere to be seen when they're not. More so than the other codes anyway.
I think it's a reflection of how badly some of the A-League clubs are run. Even if you lived in Newcastle and loved the Jets, how could you have supported the team the way Tinkler and Stubbins ran it? Even Western Sydney Croatia, oh I'm sorry the "Wanderers", have just sacked half their squad.
Knowing most soccer fans (WSW in particular) they'll probably just set fire to the store and then loot it.
