    Performance figures:

I am a little confused, different reviews giving vastly different performance figures from sub USB 2.0 speeds to halfway decent speeds.

EDIT: Okay let's try this again…

READ speeds seem to be decent @ ~100MB/s
WRITE speeds vary depending on who you ask, anywhere from 20-46MB/s seems the range. Apparently newly manufactured ones got a little speed boost. Then there are some on Amazon claiming 10-20MB/s writes. Lots of inconsistencies in these sticks it seems.

  • So what's the recommended OzBargainer "buy" price per GB for USB 2.0 and USB 3.0.
I confess I thought $0.50/GB was good for USB 2.0 (for smallers sizes e.g. 8GB or less) but I wouldn't be paying postage on top of that. I just lashed out $13.95 for 32GB class 10 micro sd.

    • I haven't thought about it but I guess $0.50/GB would be pretty close. Higher performance above, slow poke drives below. Guesstimate.

This drive seems to be hit and miss depending on batch, could get a tortoise or a hare (well maybe a 3 legged one)

    • Thats a good question. As the speeds vary wildly (see alwynpan's great link above), I don't think of cost per gigabyte.

      My formula is this.

      1. Capacity needed for its goal
      2. Best cost/performance for that capacity. If the prices are similar, I'll give precedence to speed over cost.

Put simply, you look at the drives in the top 10% of the performance chart for a given capacity. What is cheapest? Camelcamelcamel.com can help with historical prices on a model of a drive.

With the drop in AUD value (the Aussie $), the cost per gb is even more turbulent
Hard drives are a slightly different ballgame.

I consider this drive a very poor performer and might pay $5 in a clearance bin, but I'd regret the purchase. The write speed would really make this an unpleasant product to use. If you can afford the Sandisk Extreme (great), or the Mushkin Ultra (even better), the performance is amazing!!

I have 2 of these.. The write speed is horribly slow.. 8-9MBs.. Avoid

    • I have one and it reads at 95mb/sec and writes at 45mb/sec sustained. 8-9mb/sec sounds like its not being used with usb2.0 not usb3.0. Or bad quality control on Sandisk's part.

Bought one of these a few months back, write speed was meh and then the device failed after minimal use. Fool me once… Etc.

  • Design is not so good for slightly recessed ports, can't push the drive in far enough. I use mine for X360 and if it's not sitting perfectly straight in the port it won't read.
