Truphone SIM 9₵ a min 9₵ SMS - Anyone tried them? Looks like a bargain for people who don't need data or MMS

This is basically a repost of a question I asked on Whirlpool but is probably more suited to OzBargainers looking for a simple call and sms service with no expiry.

Hi, I'm generally a very low use mobile phone user. Some SMS and the occasional phone call – no data or mms etc.

While looking around for a new plan/provider came across Truphone SIM which while aimed at the traveler appears to suit my needs here in Oz.

Does anyone use them? Any pros or cons? Do they charge for porting number in or out etc?

Any info welcome :-)

I sent an email to the company this morning with a list of question and could post the replies here if anyone is interested.

Weird thing is I found mention of this company while looking up info for a project which sends out power outage sms alerts but it is probably time I left my 30 centa a minute/15 cents sms provider.

Cheers,
monkymind

According to their website the SIM costs $30 and comes with $15 credit, so $15 upfront charge. Couldn't discover if there is an expiry for the credit.

Aldimobile costs 12c/min or SMS and credit lasts a year. The $5 starter pack comes with $5 credit. So might be cheaper if you make few calls or SMS.

    • A search brings up an number of CIS with various dates but I think this is the most recent one:

      https://www.truphone.com/au/Legal/Critical-Information-Summa…

and it states "Credit does not expire, so long as you continue to use the service every 120 days, the term will continue."

The Aldimobile is my current fallback plan :-) but Truphone's $15 upfront charge wouldn't be a negative if I end up using their service for several years.

      • That's 1500c and you save 3c over Aldimobile per call min or SMS so you would need 500 to break even. That's not a small number.

        • I agree that is why Aldimobile is my fallback but using SMS is my main use and 10 a week isn't that many (or the 55.5 minutes of calls to break even).

BTW I think I quoted the wrong CIS. It should have been:

This is a Prepaid plan with no minimum term. Prepaid credit does not expire, so long as you continue to use the service every 180 days, the term will continue.
