How Well Will This System Play New Games?

Specs:
i5 4590 3.3GHz
8Gb 1600MHz ram
Standard hdd (not ssd yet)

GPU - TBA

So basically I'm looking at the $200-$250 range in video cards, hoping to be able to play GTA5, COD, latest NFS when it comes out etc. (So I have the rest of the system, currently shopping for the GPU)

Just wondering how it will fair with maybe something like this or this or this

Thanks all :)

So you left out the 1 item that decides 95% of how well a computer plays games….

    • Was on a budget late last year, took advantage of a deal that was on here. Needed the system for general use, mrs has been using PS, Lightroom etc

So yes, had to :( But thats now changing lol

      • Well pick a GPU within your budget and we can answer your questions. The rest of your computer is generic enough to have little impact on the gaming performance. Like more Ram would be handy but minimal impact, GPU is the key.

          @Spackbace:
Those cards will play all those games on low/medium settings. Id rather spend that money on a 2nd hand more powerful card to get better performance

  • Nvidia GTX750 will play games at medium settings or so. Why don't you go for an ATI R9 280 or around that mark. Around the $250 mark, but more performance.

Edit: Didn't notice the comment above when I posted.

AMD has announced that by the end of next month the new 300 series GPU's will be released for sale, so if you can wait till then it might be best to build your system but omit your card for the time being.

    • System already built and has been in use for about 8 months :)

      • OP, buy a SSD at the same time. Do a fresh install on it and turn your SATA into a slave. You won't regret it! Even if you only go 256gb.

For $250-300 you could probs pick up a second hand R9 290 which I would say is worth it and would easily play everything you throw at it

Second hand 290 would be the best bet.

  • +1 for second hand R9 290. That's what Logical Increments recomends for your CPU http://www.logicalincrements.com/

+1 for waiting a few weeks to see if secondhand 290s go down in price, or if AMD introduces something else great at that price level

Wouldn't be too sure about second hand r9 290, a ton of them were used for bitcoin mining and will now have less performance. Just wait until amd announces new cards, then nvidia might drop prices and the 290 card will also drop in price

  • I'm surprised no-one has asked, what wattage/brand psu you have?

R9 290 require 1x 6pin & 1x 8pin supplementary power - good card but you'll need a quality 550 watt psu or higher. Maybe you have one already, but just keep that in mind.

  • I don't know what budget you're on or what time you're willing to spend to solve any issues but I don't think that 2nd hand video cards are worth the hassle to save $50-$100. Make sure your power supply can power it continuously and if you're going to buy online I'd recommend PC Case Gear, they are pretty good when it comes to warranty and have systems in place when it comes to getting a replacement with a very transparent and clear process.
