  • Is fried air fattening?

    • Apparently its 80 percent less fattening

      Only if you inhale.

    • Healthier than drinking the fried oil I have found.

      • Where did you find the fried oil?

  • Can someone please explain how this would be any better than say buying a cheap flavour wave like that normally run for around $50?

I've asked people before, but nobody seems to be able to come up with a good answer. Best I can guess is it's much smaller. The induction cookers with large bowls seem to take up a lot of space, but this air fryer is fairly compact and possibly easier to clean. Some of the bowl style cookers require removing the lid and finding a place to put the lid while you're adding and removing food, which is bad if you don't have much space. Some have large lids that flip up, so they can't be used under kitchen cupboards. The air fryer just has a drawer which you slide out.

I have a cheap drawer-style air fryer I bought for $59 and it's fantastic, but too small if you're cooking for more than two people. It can only cook a very tiny chicken but not a standard size chicken. I investigated buying one of the induction-style cookers with a large glass bowl, something that could fit a whole chicken plus veggies, but it would easily take up two or three times the bench space and some of them were so heavy my wife couldn't lift the lid easily.

I'd love to hear opinions from anybody who's owned both.

I have both the smaller Philips and the $99 Avancer one. I only use the Avancer now as it is quicker, it stops when i pull the pan out to have a look. It easier to clean or tipping the oil out (Philips has grooves on the bottom to 'help' with airflow. I dont know about the XL version but i would just buy the Avancer again if i need another one.

I mean dont get me wrong the unit looks great, very modern and Im sure its user friendly.
Just dont see how they can warrant a price tag like that when its just a small convection oven..

I have this unit and its by far the kitchen appliance we use the most. Not because it can do things an oven cant do, but because its just so fast and convenient. We basically cook anything frozen, chicken and even croissants in it. The main problems are it really is only big enough for 2 people (even the XL) and its a pain to clean. In fact its impossible, more oil (yes there's usually oil in frozen food and sometimes you add oil) is slowly getting burned to the "non-stick" basket.

I soak the basket for a few hours in detergent then use steel wool to clean off anything that doesn't come off easily. But my cooker has a mesh-style basket, I've heard these Philips brand ones have a wire-style basket which may be more difficult to clean.

I agree with you, we hardly use the oven anymore as the air cooker does everything the oven does. Nuggets, chips, drumsticks, chicken wings come out so crispy, I could never get them right in the oven. Plus it takes our fan-forced gas oven about 15 minutes just to get up to temperature, but the air-fryer takes 3 minutes to come up to temperature and most food is cooked in less than 20 minutes! But it would be nice if it was bigger. I can reheat three pieces of pizza by wedging them in, but that's only good for a snack, not a meal.

Just a heads up my digital panel failed after one month. Reviews of this state it's a common problem, as is smoke. It's tiny even though it's XL. The food it prepared was fantastic prior to it failing, also I have read the halogen glass ovens aren't good for air fryed frozen chips which are very good in the airfryer.

I bought the slightly larger Avancer just recently and the Ozbargain code worked so it was around $105.
It works well but is big and ugly. It cooks a beaut Chikko roll and maybe I am a Grot, but I have not washed it yet and just flush it out with some water under the tap when it is still warm.
Our convection oven is as slow as a wet week and thats just to preheat.

    • Got the same Avancer. I compare it functionality wise to a fan-forced gas oven, in which case it's tiny in comparison and a huge space saver :)

  • Can this fry icecream?

I bought the ~$100 Avancer on a whim a month ago and never going back to not having one. Have always been bummed our kitchen never had a big fan-forced gas oven. Now I'm glad we don't. As far as I can tell these airfryers can do everything a large fan-forced gas oven 4* the size does, in 1/3rd the time, and more accuracy with the heat distribution. Absolutely worth it's weight.

    • My friend bought for $70 (with free postage with a code I found on OzBargain) a Kogan unit which looks identical to the 2.2L Avancer (probably made in the same factory) and she's absolutely thrilled with it:
      https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/low-fat-air-fryer-white/

They also have a 3.5L model which is a bit bigger:
      https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-2000w-35l-low-fat-air-fry…

      • I got the 3.5L Avancer for $104, it was a past ozbargain :). And wow, you're right, it's practically identical to the Kogan 3.5L you listed. Down to the little icons up the top that tell me how long to cook things for. Except for the colour. Kogan's matte black does look pretty sleek I've got to say.
