New Modem/Router Required for Uflix - Recommendations?

Hey

I have a crappy Telstra issued Thomson shitbox that I can't change DNS settings in. (even UFlix can't fix it!!)

So.. I don't really want to spend heaps but I was wondering what would be a cheap option?

Budget up to about $100 inc delivery.

Cheers!

  • What are you trying to watch netflix on? You should be able to just change it in the normal windows internet properties?

    • I want to change the DNS on the router as I watch netflix on multiple TV's and don't want to change DNS on each piece of hardware.

It's for Uflix / getflix rather than netflix really.

  • I don't mind the TP-Link TD-W8950N as a cheap configurable router.

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c… - probably about $50 inc postage (was for me in Wagga).

Can change DNS settings easily, cheap and all the ones I have installed have been pretty reliable. Downside is Wifi is only 150 MB N and the range isn't so great but it worked fine in my house with multiple devices (phones, tablets, laptops) streaming stuff. Currently use the TP-Link Archer D7, better modem/router chipset and AC 1750MB but a bit out of your price range!

I'm presuming you want to watch US netflix on multiple devices without having to change the dns of every device? Otherwise, like happychild100 posted above, change manually, save some money!

  • $112 not incl Delivery

    TP-LINK Archer D5 AC12000
    http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/network-device/14169-tp-link…

Gigabit ethernet, 5ghz dual band 867mbps wireless AC, 2x USB 2.0 ports. etcetera

    Sale ends midnight tonight.

    • Will this have a long Wi-Fi range (if distanced from base) or are all modems pretty similar?

      • Dunno. Will have to read reviews.

I have the Archer D9. Cost me $199. It's worth every penny… well, maybe not for a normal user, but now that I'm moving homes from a teeny tiny little apartment to a 2 storey house, in hindsight it was a good investment.

My brother has the Archer D7. It's also got good range.

        Not sure about the D5.

It'll be better than your crapbox, that's for sure, and it's also not terribly expensive for a 2.4ghz + 5ghz all in one device.
Remember to take advantage of AC Wireless you need to also upgrade your networking adapters to support the standard. Most 2014 era phones and laptops have wireless AC, but your desktop may not.
