Call Forwarding Query - Alternatives to Skype?

Hi all,

I will be overseas next week and wanted to setup call forwarding from my phone to Skype number and then to a local sim from Skype so people/clients can call me at cheap rates and I can receive the calls cheap too.

I have set this up and tested it here in Oz and the call forwarding time is quite slow via my phone and Skype (+10 seconds). Other people seem to have the same issue even after reducing Skype's call forwarding time and the forwarding time of the service provider on the phone.

Was wondering can anyone recommend any alternatives to Skype to do the same as above but much quicker?

Thanks

  • I've used Flynumber.com quite a lot for myself and customers.

You buy a local Australian landline number ($5 for 30 days) and forward it to your overseas number. Then you forward your Australian mobile to the local Australian landline number.

OR you can also forward it to VoIP/SIP using a VoIP app such as Bria/Groundwire. The benefit of that is that the calls are free. You will need a good data connection on the international sim card though.

  • Depending on where you are going, timezones etc. If they are very different are you going to answer calls at 2am?

One strategy is leave voice message for them to call you on the voip number again explaining this will sve them an os call.

"hi this is gerbub, I am overseas at present, (returning Jul X) if you need to talk with me please call 08 5555 5555 for the cost of a local call"

Mynetfone is a provider I have used with a number of VOIP apps on my phone (IOS/Android), Use their Whirlpool saver account for better rates www.mynetfone.com.au/whirlpool. Of course there are others you can use as well.

If you want to get fancy you could have this number forwarded to your overseas phone rather than use the voip app, but you will pay the forwarding costs. The Voip app way will help as you will know its from Oz right away.

As side benefit of this is if its not important they may wait until you return.

  • Get onto toggle mobile. You can buy a local Australian number for $5 for the year (free for 30 days or less). The sim has free incoming calls in heaps of popular destinations across the world. THis would be quite simple to setup. No fiddling with voip or anything like that. Call credit does not expire either.
