Your Favorite Cinema for Vintage Movies

For years me and SO always go to Moonlight Cinema for old vintage movies. But it is expensive, doesn't run except Spring/Summer, and for me, sometimes weather and seat location (hard to find good spots, even an hour before starts) could really ruin the experience. So we think conventional cinema is where we should go. I have tried Astor, but although they have good setup, again seats/chairs really need an upgrade, lack of 3D (always hot for Avatar) also bug me.

Now OzB style - which cinema you preferred to go watch old movies? Main criteria is: CHEAP - good setup (good A/V) - nice chair - quality movies.

      • Get in an hour early to grab one of the leather sofas or bean bags.

Also $4 pizzas until 9pm, pretty damn good especially for the price.

I always go there on Tuesday evenings for beer and pizza after running, but have never stuck around for the movies :(

    • Sounds good, definitely going to check it out.

It seems likes its shown at a small bar, will we have any trouble finding a seat?

    • If those are 'vintage'.. what does that make me? O_O

  • Nova Cinema on Lygon St has discounted tickets on Monday nights.

    • 10+ years already in Melbourne, have no idea why i haven't try Nova. Kept hearing their name, always in to-go list.

Wants vintage movies…complains about no Avatar

    • Haha, saw Avatar in 3d 4 times now in cinemas. What i notice though, projectors that able to show 3d usually brighter and have more contrast than those that can't. Anyway, not really important true, just saying that soon enough those 3d genre will be vintage.

  • Classic cinema in Elsternwick is definitely worth a go, it'is my local cinema and I love it. Comfy, never too crowded, nice range of snacks and drinks and they have a classic movie season happening now. http://www.classiccinemas.com.au/Promotion/Classics-At-Class…

Not in Australia, but when I was in LA for holidays a couple years ago I went to the New Beverly Cinema which is owned by Quentin Tarantino. Watched Jackie Brown and After Hours.

The Astor in Melb is good when I was there. Watched Big Trouble In Little China.

Are there any in Syd? I know places like Dendy and Event Cinemas in George St show older movies, but anything like Astor?

    • Kudos for QT. Die hard fans myself.

I only have 1 gripe with Astor. They really need to renovate their chairs. Stiff, low back, really uncomfortable.

      • I kind of like the chairs, but they're heritage listed. They're not allowed to change them.
