Is $31 AU for Microsoft Office 2013 Standard a Bargain?

I work for an Australian not-for-profit and am always trying to get good, legal deals for our business.

Before I knew about Ozbargain, I purchased Microsoft software from Connecting Up. http://www.connectingup.org/

I've always assumed their prices were the best at any given time, but just wanted to confirm with the ever-knowledgeable ozbargain community.

So is $31 AU for Microsoft Office 2013 a bargain?

HUP = Home User Program and is available for users who's companies have existing Office licenses with software assurance.

I believe KitWalker is interested in pricing for his company purchases.

  • $31 is still pretty cheap.

    • I'm assuming you guys are aware of this but the site says AU$ 31 ex GST.

Would be cheaper to use the HUP which is $15 incl GST i believe.

      • HUP is for companies who have a home use licence. This is usually larger corporates and educational organisations. The OP works for a non-for-profit so will most likely not be suitable.

        • Not really.

HUP is a Software Assurance benefit for volume licenses of Microsoft Office Pro Plus, its not a separate license as such.

  • If you qualify you can get it Office 365 for cheap/free

Thanks for all the comments. I really appreciate the time you've taken to reply.

I looked at the HUP and as GaelicAU suggested, I don't think that is designed for small not-for-profits. I'm the the only employee at our not-for-profit, all other work is done by volunteers. The HUP looks like it is designed for much larger organisations!

But the suggestion from Drew22 for Office 365 looks spot on. I think we qualify to get it for free, particlarly as the Microsoft site links me back to Connecting Up as the organisation that verifies Australians as not-for-profit and I'm already registered with them.

So I'll give office 365 a whirl tomorrow and see how it goes. Hopefully I end up saving $31 (plus GST)! :)

    • Yeah, most of what people do in Office can be done in the online versions of Word and Excel which for NFPs is free.
The upshot is you get free email hosting, etc too

    • This is probably not all legal, but I dont think it's illegal… provided you have emails from a company that is subscribed to HUP (one example I know that worked is internode), you can actually get a HUP license as well.

As such, if you have internet services with internode or something you can probably still get it for $15 off HUP.

  • Ah, I just read things more carefully and realised that the free Office 365 doesn't include Word etc and if I pay it is $2.20 a month (not a one-off payment) which will add up quickly enough and surpass $31. (btw, just remembered that GST will be claimed back).

And as I have to do things as legal as possible, it looks like I'm back to square one.

    $31 it is.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed as you've all verified that $31 is pretty good value in itself.

    • Is the online version of Word not sufficient?

What are people doing in Word that really requires them to have the desktop edition, that can't be done on the browser version?

    • Thanks for putting this post up Kitwalker. Is the $31 (now $41) version of MS Office from Connecting up MS Office 2013 or is it a 12 month licence for Office 365?

I would like to buy 2013 as it's not subscription based (I don't use any of the online functionality) and would just like the latest version of Office where you only have to pay once and it's yours to keep forever.
