Bonus QFF Points on ANZ CC - Worthwhile When Annual Fee Is Due Soon?

Got an email from Qantas offering 50% bonus QFF points on my ANZ FF Black card. (See below.)

I understand this is a targeted offer (some of my friends didn't get the email).

The T&C states that "The bonus Qantas Points will automatically be allocated to your nominated Qantas Frequent Flyer account within 90 days from making an eligible purchase."

Does it mean I won't get any bonus points if I don't keep my card for more than 90 days? Annual fee is due to be charged in July/August & I don't think the card is worth keeping at that price.

As a valued ANZ Frequent Flyer Black cardholder, ANZ will give you 50% bonus Qantas Points on all eligible purchases made with your ANZ Frequent Flyer Black credit card from 1 June to 31 August 2015*.

All you need to do is use your credit card during the three month promotional period and your bonus points will automatically be credited to your account - it's that easy to be rewarded.

I doubt the timing of the offer is a coincidence, a way to tempt everyone to keep the card after the 1 year promo (and in the process pay the $425 annual fee). Certainly not worth it, cancel the card and move on to the next offer.

  • Haha good one, I can personally say that neither I nor those I know who have gotten this email have received 50% bonuses. Some of us have received higher percentages, some lower.

Truth be told it'll definitely be a supposed sweetener to tempt people in training these cards.

But the stark reality is that these petty bonuses are nowhere near justified by the $400+ annual fee.

    Thanks, but no thanks.

  • Agree. Won't bother if it means paying the annual fee.

  • Im in the same boat. My 1st year fee free Black card is due for renewal end of July, and I got this offer aswell. I certainly wont be keeping it open and paying $425 for what I consider to be very average perks for that price. Incidentally I got approved for another ANZ platinum last week for the 1st year fee free and another serve of 50k points!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a clause with the latest round of ANZ offers, that to obtain the bonus points this year you cannot have held an ANZ QFF or Rewards card in the 12 months preceding your application?

There was another thread where I mentioned that I called ANZ Closure Dept to request for the annual fee of $429 to be waived for my FFB for the up coming renewal. I'm a similar case to melbbargainchaser. They refused and basically said my 50k FF points promo offer was too good already and their system won't allow it. I then sent a securemail via my net banking requesting the same thing. Couple days later got a reply saying they confirm it'll be waived once it's charged. Hopefully I don't run into any problems then, but pretty sure it'll be ok with that confirmation. Will keep this card going if they stick by their word. I also got the email about extra points for the next 3 months so happy days (for now)!

    • Thanks for the tip! I'm going to do the same thing because it definitely isn't worth the fee.

      • Tried it and they refused to even lower the fee.

Rang up to cancel and explained to them and they kept saying how their card is competitive and is worth the fee etc. Kept asking me to go onto a lower fee card.

To me, this card is no way worth the fee. There are other cards which are cheaper that give more benefits.

I'm personally moving to a Suncorp Platinum Clear Options card ($49pa for QFF enrolment) which is a mastercard and gives 1pt per dollar. Also going to the Amex Platinum Edge to get amex points and get a free flight every year.

    • I also tried contacting them with securemail but got the same "annual fee will be charged on such and such a date" response. Cancelled my card.

Funny thing is, the lady I spoke to in the card closure department tried to convince me that I should switch to an inferior card to save on annual fee when I'd already told her that I'm getting the same level of benefits from my other cards without paying any annual fee (hence closing my CC account with them). Why would I want an inferior card?

  • Cancelled my account today.

Annoying guy on the phone was like "so you just signed up for the bonus points".
And I'm like "there was a compelling offer to try to product, and after a year I've concluded that it doesn't justify the annual fee, so please close my account now"

but yeh doesn't seem like they're waiving annual fees at the moment. Don't care though. the card wasn't that great anyway. already have lounge access from elsewhere.

    • Despite the unnecessary question, you could've just said yes. There's really nothing wrong with you signing up then cancelling before the annual fee was charged.

      • yes, i cldve said anything
