iPhone 4S battery has lasted way longer than usual today and I don't know why?

Something odd happened with my iphone 4s and am hoping someone can explain..

Usually the battery only lasts me a couple of hours, 2 hours if I’m using it a fair bit

I charged it this morning (now 9 hours ago) and have been using it all day, varying brightness, played some games/web browsing and it still has 70% battery left. In the settings-usage it says 8 hours, 38 minutes standby since full charge, and 5 hours, 41 minutes usage.

What possible reason is there for the battery to suddenly be lasting so long? I’m really confused. Even if the battery % wasn't working properly it still would have been dead by now..

*cue The Twilight Zone theme song … spoooky! :p

  • Downloaded the Nokia app?

  • It's not my field, but could it be sommat to do with how you were accessing the net today? Being connected to WIFI sucks a lot of juice. I can use my android tablet for more than twice as long if it's not connected to WIFI, than if it is, before it runs out of charge. So maybe if you usually connect your moby to the net at home via your home internet service/plan (via WIFI/your rouiter), but for some reason today you were accessing the net via your phone's plan (i.e. over the mobile network), might that explain it?

Just a thought, as I say I actually know almost nothing about mobile phones.

    • I don't actually have a sim card in the phone so it's always connected to the home wifi and was all day. Very strange :/

  • Perhaps it's time to change the new battery.

I think there are 2 possible reasons which are 1. your phone used to read the battery wrong. that might be the software was "corrupted" hence it read the battery wrong and other stuffs like battery drained quicker than usual. there's no way to fix it unless you restore it, and you cant use the back up data.
    2. your battery is about to die. if you have had the phone for around 2 years without replacing the battery i suggest you do that now.

The other reasons might come from the mainboard and cable connections where charging socket and battery and mainboard meet. that's very unlikely.

I used to work at a phone store where we repair phones tablets and stuffs, my answer is gathered by my exp and what Apple staffs answered me.

I always use Iphone and 4s is the best of all i reckon, in terms of battery consuming, minor problems, …. very sturdy and reliable.

    • Thanks for the info they are interesting points. I think both of those may be possible, the phone also started doing this thing where once it runs out of battery and shuts down, I plug it in to charge it, and it immediately starts up through the cycle, gets the the lock screen then shuts off again. It does this for about 10 minutes until it has enough power to stay on.

I think replacing the battery would be more hassle/cost than it's worth atm, I'd just get a new itouch or something

you might wanna check how to change the battery yourself as I think a new battery on Ebay is fairly cheap to keep the phone running again and it is pretty easy DIY.
