Plane tickets from SFO to SYD return - Emergency!!

Hey guys, my grandma is in critical condition in the hospital at the moment and my Aunt from the US needs to fly over here as soon as possible. Could anyone help me with finding a reasonably priced return ticket. The earliest they can find is Sunday Night US time,

Thanks.

  • Currently, the only direct flight SFO - SYD is w' United. Is that who you tried? Or, will she go via LAX?

    Via LA may be your best best if she cant get out of SFO. However;

    AirNZ is the cheapest Ive found, but its via Auckland. Ex SFO @ 1pm on the 12/06, landing 830 sunday morning, and guesstimating a return of 22/06 was under $2K USD.
    (somehow the return flight on that one was premium economy)

    Qantas has two flights leaving LAX 12/06, one at 10pm and the other at 12am - both will arrive on Sunday in Sydney.
    You can link up with either of these on American Airlines website, and it looks like this will cost you in the region of $2.6K USD

    Delta (codesharing with Virgin) have a flight which leaves 3pm 12/06, also via LA.
    It will arrives in Sydney on Sunday at 620am. Depending on your return leg date, you could get a return trip (including the above flight) for $3K US (not cheap, but last minute never is)

    Good luck

    • Hi there, could you link me the air-newzealand one?

      • Sorry, not sure how to do that from my mobile.
        Just checked though, and It's still available for $1965 USD.
        Economy departing SFO 12/06 @4pm on Nz9767 connecting in lax on Nz1, lands in Sydney (via akl) 830am Sunday.
        Premium economy Return flight depart 22//06 on nz704 @ 1150am. Arrives SFO 330pm 22/06.

        Just make sure you're on the American website, not Aus

        • Thank you!

          @Immeg:

          And because nothing about flights make sense….

          If she can get someone to drive her 2 hours to Monterey, she can fly via SFO for $1370 USD at http://www.bookairfare.com/

          MRY-SYD 13/6
          SYD-SBA 17/6(should be plenty of return dates)

          When she checks in at Sydney she can let them know she's only going to SFO but unfortunately it doesn't work that way on the first leg…..

    Flightfox have a good reputation of finding good hacks for cheap flights at the last minute, might be worth giving it a go.

  • https://www.google.com/flights/#search;f=SFO,OAK,SJC;t=SYD;d…

    Looks like there are definitely flights on Saturday Night… and just a 35 minute layover in LAX.

    For a few hundred extra it's possible to depart late on Friday Califorina time.

    $1706 USD return.

      There's little chance you would get through LAX immigration in 35mins

      • It's one ticket on the same airline. They are going from USA, out of the country, not into it.

        • You still need to clear immigration at LAX though. The flight from SFO to LAX is only a domestic flight, so you usually just go through the domestic security at SFO and need to go through international security (and I think also re-check your luggage) at LAX.

          No way would I pick a flight with only a 35 minute layover in LAX. Recently my girlfriend had a flight with a one hour layover in LAX scheduled, and missed the connection because the first flight was delayed by 40 minutes. She had to stay in a hotel and leave the following night. It's not worth risking it.

    then:
