Sushi Platters

I'm having a party in a month and I am looking at buying 3-4 sushi platters just for people to pick at, when they arrive. I've gone through quite a few website but I don't know what's best to choose.
Also I've been looking at the prices and they vary quite a bit between the stores.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

I'm situation around castle hill.
Thanks!

Have you had a look at the group buying websites? the likes of groupon, scoopon, livingsocial, spreetz, ourdeal, cudon tend to have discounted sushi platters from time to time.

considering the weather though, I would rather get those frozen party pack from Coles or Woolies. On sale they can be had for $5-$6 for 65 pieces. 4 platters of that with some condiments will cost you around $30 compared to $120ish for 4 platters of discounted sushi platter

    • Thanks for the response!
Had a look at only Groupon so far. The platter deals only seem to be in darwin or adelaide! Sydney only has a few venues which are all you can eat.

I had the thought of that but i will be just having the sushi as an appetiser with a few other things. All my hot food will be served after everyone has arrived!

I've never ordered platters and have never paid attention to prices, so I can't really help you there sorry! But Sushi Hub make really delicious sushi (really fresh sashimi and tasty rice which is never dry). There's one in Castle Towers - they're always pretty busy and were making up a lot of orders last weekend when I went by, if that's any indication of their platter popularity.

Probably best to wait for more replies first though - hopefully others can offer you personal experiences and/or other places and prices to compare.

edit - alternatively, you could DIY. You've got a month to practise which should be long enough to learn how to do some nice simple, tasty rolls! :)

Thats the main website i was checking out and It seems to be the most reasonable. Im just unsure what platters to get as i don't actually eat any of it myself!

I wouldn't DIY because the food will go to waste and i want to reduce as much preparing and cooking time as i can!

How many guests are you having? 3-4 platters is quite a generous amount - great if you know all your guests have no particular food/dietary requirements or allergies, but it might be something to consider if some of them do (just so you don't have sushi and thus money going to waste).

'Safe' options, I reckon, would be Sets A, C and E. G too. Some peeps aren't big fans of raw fish but if you know your party goers would enjoy it, then you really could pick anything! :D Sets A, C, E and G have rolls which contain pieces of raw fish anyway, so those who like it can pick it and those who don't can pick other pieces anyway..

Sushi Hub do make beef rolls (and chicken, soft shell crab, and.. heaps more lol) - interestingly those don't appear in any of the platters.

        • There will be between 35-50. The sushi will be mainly for the ladies to snack on, as i know not many of the men will eat it! A few are vegetarians, which is the only dietry requirement ill have to meet!
Im thinking ill get 3 platters (A, C & G).. which i know will all get eaten.

          Thanks for all your help!

What do you think of these platters?
Im also picking up the cake i ordered from the same shopping centre.

@Puska: Seeing as you have a few vegetarian guests to consider, perhaps Sushi Hub's platters aren't so ideal. While they look quite fancy and they do make delicious sushi, their platters all appear to be very seafood based - I don't see many vegetarian rolls at all in any of the platters. Their Set A has some plain cucumber rolls, avocado rolls, egg? rolls, but all other Sets have seafood ingredients in every component. Oh wait, Set E appears to have 12 vegetarian mini rolls out of 62 pieces.

Asakaze looks pretty good by comparison! Variety wise I mean (depending on which you choose). The bottom platter 'Mino Hoso' would be rather similar to the Mini Maki Set A platter at Sushi Hub, but cheaper. Their Combination looks kinda the best, IMO - inari sushi is delicious and won't be left behind like plain/boring cucumber or carrot mini rolls could be and it's vegetarian, plus it has chicken and seafood in there for everyone else. Looks really good.

          They all do lol.

        • @waterlogged turnip:

Ok, thanks for that! i might purchase the platters from this shop, so i wont have to do 2 stop overs when collecting the cake!

Can't help you because you're in Sydney but as for what to get - most people like salmon (smoked or fresh), tuna is also always a good one, cucumber for those who don't like fish and maybe a prawn option as well.

The main thing is that it is prepared fresh

      • Thanks for the response!

Im thinking of going with a selection as there will be vegetarians also! (they will eat the any of the vegetarian choices im thinking) carrot, cucumber, avocado. :P

  • I recently bought a platter from sushi sushi, it was fine and from memory it was $36 which is pretty good. The quality was fine. Not the best but palateable. I know they have had some bad press in the past due to some sanitisation issues but I think its ok now, havent gotten sick eating their food.

    • I ended up purchasing 3 players from sushi hub!
I ended up having 1 left over haha. You don't realise how big they actually are until you receive them!

      Thanks for the feedback.

      • The rice is really filling, you don't want to under cater but there are always lonely unpopular ones left. If I am with family I eat just the toppings and discard the rice towards the end when its apparent we won't finish. Hope you had a good party

        • They were all actually eaten! I didn't put the third one out because I started bringing out some of the main dishes and everyone was saying they were full. So I had them for lunch the next day with my girlfriend, her friends and family haha.

          Thanks, was a good night.
