2.4 amps micro USB charger cable

Hi all,

I bought myself a 4.8 amps dual USB car charger. I read on the net that cable quality does matter when it comes to charging speed, i.e. some can't even take on 2.4 amps

So what's a good quality reputable brand of micro-usb cable which can handle 2.4 amps of charging? Not too sure about some unknown brand on ebay to be honest, don't wanna take risk in electrical stuff..

Thanks

Hi, you will need to search for a cable that can output 2A. If you need a longer cable (2M and above) then consider getting a thicker cable (24AWG); as the longer the cable, the less charge it will be able to supply.

i picked up a 3M cable from ebay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Tikbro-Micro-USB-Charging-Data-Ca…) after recommendations from a few forums. The delivery is a little slow, but the charging cable works great and my phone charges as fast as with a smaller cable that came with the phone manafacturer.

Tikbro is amazing in terms of the charging ability but they do have a wobbly head issue where the microUSB connector becomes wobbly after few months. The manufacturer was talking about next gen Tikbro and improving on it, so it might be worth it to wait for the next gen.

      • Hmm.. must have missed this post. Good spot. i just got my cable a couple of days ago and the micro usb head is pretty solid. Hope it doesnt get wobbly. It is a tight/snug fit into the phone tho.

I think it takes bit of time before the spring gets worn out (and if you are lucky, you might actually own one that wouldn't become wobbly). Though, it's a common issue that many people report. Other than that, the cable is really good.

    • problem is I don't even know how good is cable like from Samsung ..some I do find charge a little slower..

      • Usually those cables that you get from manufacturers are reliable and fast enough (then again, it depends on your devices, they would be all reliable but not sure about the charging speed). Whether it would be able to take 2.4A charge, again, depend on your devices. Whether it is the cable that's letting you down? Not sure, it could be your charger, your phone, your battery etc. You would not need to pay $16 for a cable, but to find a sturdy fast cable, you'd need to do some research.

I've found Anker cables to be reliable and fast enough for my purpose, and they costed me about $4 inc postage per cable (bought like 2x 3 pack, 30cm). Though not sure whether you can grab them from Amazon now at that price (I think it was lightning deal). I will dig up my amazon order history if you want me to (I cannot access Amazon right now, but I would be able to after 5~6pm).

      • i have a couple of Samsung phone cables (from the S2 and S5) and both of these cables can carry 1A to the phone. My phone/s can take a max of 1A and i dont have a Tablet to see if it can carry 2A or not.
Use an app called Ampere to determine how many amps your current cables can carry.

        • The S5 can pull at least 1.5A.

        • @eug: The app is not that accurate, that's my assumption.

HOly cow! $16 for a micro usb cable…is it really that much better?

    • Flat cables of any kind will always cost more.

  • just clarifying something here, does every device on the market able to take on 2.4A charge? If not, I guess I just wasted my money buying all these chargers & cable with 2.4A output eh..?

    • Most new devices, would charge at the micro USB standard of avg 2.1A, so no dont think youve wasted money.

I believe that your device also controls how much amps it is allowed. So if your cable carriers 2.4A and if your device can use a maximum of 1A, then the device will only pull 1A from the cable.

On Android, you can download an app called Ampere, which tells you how much charge is being passed on from your cable to your device. Good way to test is a cable is up to scratch or not.

        • I found the app to be really good to find whether the cable is alright one or not. That being said, it's not mA accurate (as mentioned by the app description).

        • @AznMitch: Fair enough. But as you mention, it does give a good indicator on if a cable is good or not. Some of my longer cables came up with around 300-400mA being passed while the original manufacturers cables all came up with 1000mA being passed.

        • @Specter: I didn't mean to sound like "you shouldn't use it", if I came across like that. What I was trying to say was, it may not come up as 2.1mA when it actually is, so don't trust it to that extent. I've bought one of those "measuring equipments" from Aliexpress. Should be interesting to see at least.

I've heard that longer cables are more prone to being slow (because of the length).

        • @AznMitch: it certainly didnt come across like that mate! :)

  • Anker premium cables are meant to be quite good

  • Anyone know a reputable ebay seller which sells quality genuine cable?

Somehow I just don't trust these sellers from HK who claim to sell the original brand cable…smell a knockoff..

    Am I been paranoid though?

    • Nah, it's understandable. It's so easy to get fakes on eBay (in general).

  • settled on the tikbro brand …so many buyers…so had to be ok ..:)
