My Amaysim Experience

I finally thought i should ditch the overpriced Telstra mobile service this week and join Amaysim - terrible decision in hindsight.

Definitely don't waste your time porting over to them, they're a joke.

I've posted this on their facebook page and hopefully it will save someone else from wasting their time.

"Absolutely pathetic Amaysim!

I ported my number from Telstra to you three days ago - immediately had little to no reception in Melbourne CBD.

Constant drop outs - to the point google maps doesn't even work because it can't hold an internet connect for more than 20 secs at a time.

Your hopeless customer service team can only offer no other solution than for me to pay to have a new sim sent out to me??

And apparently if i'd like to have the issue escalated I need to jump through hoops to test the sim in other phones…

What a waste of my time and money!

I look forward to porting back to Telstra immediately "

That would be the Optus network, not Amaysim specifically. And either it's the network itself, or (more likely in the CBD) your phone simply doesn't support the bands it uses. Might help to check coverage maps first, and check if your phone is compatible with those bands.

  • instead of bending over and taking one for the team,u should have moved to boost at half the price.
They are carriers for Telstra !

    • Plus 1 for Boost - absolutely awesome service and I am in West Gippsland!

  • Trying out amaysim as of a week ago from free month. Reception and internet has been fine throughout city so far and was even getting 4g in the loop which was a surprise.

Your phone probably doesn't support the bands that optus (and in turn amaysim) uses.

  • I have been with Amaysim for many months and never had problem even in a secluded area on my office floor in the CBD. It might be your building or your desk location if you work in a large office space. Maybe your building have an internal Telstra transmitter. If you are having problems on the street, I would suggest the problem might be with your phone or settings.

  • Hmm interesting to read that the bands on my phone might not be compatible - any idea where i'd find out more about this? I have the OnePlus One (brought from DWI)

With Boost are you guys paying the $40 per month?
any way to reduce this through some deal?

      OnePlus One:

      2G bands GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
      3G bands HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100
      4G bands LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 7(2600), 17(700), 38(2600), 40(2300)

      Australian network frequencies:

Looks like your phone is fully compatible with known Optus bands (OPO doesn't really release gimped region-specific phones). That's interesting - I would generally expect decent reception in the CBD with any of the three major networks.

      • Thanks, appreciate the effort.

It's a bummer , but good to know it's not my phone's fault

I have a OnePlus bought from DWI and generally don't have any issues with reception on Amaysim. However when you go into an area with limited coverage (e.g. garage or concrete building) I find that the phone loses reception then continues to access the Edge network which is really crap with data.

When I first switched to Amaysim it took a day or 2 and fiddling with the APNs to get the right combo. Basically, you have to delete all the APNs for the phone to work right. That might help with your constant dropouts.

        • @neil:
An incorrect APN would only effect the internet connection, not the phone reception. I would definitely check whether your phone network preference has somehow been set to 2G only.

I think from posts above we can just about rule out frequency incompatibility. Optus uses 900MHz, whereas Telstra uses 850. Unless you have bought your phone from a "non-standard" supplier, it should be capable of both frequencies.

          @ThirdRonnie:

It's a "bug" with the new Cyanogen + One Plus. Here for example.

I couldn't make a call or use the Internet. Was defaulted to LTE to both Optus and then a new APN that I created for Amaysim. Deleting all of them seemed to do the trick.

With that said, I'm working in a big building in the CBD today (Collins Street) and I'm only getting "E", Edge Network. Just turned on airplane mode and off and I'm back to LTE. Pretty annoying quirk.

Re Boost I'm on the $40 unlimited deal 3GB data and bonus 1GB every Sunday - full Telstra service but no 4G data (I think there is a hack for 4G floating around). There is a $20 deal which I think is for 14 day unlimited, 1GB data - peruse boost.com.au for the pricing :)

As mentioned, your phone probably doesn't support the bands Optus use. +1 for switching to Boost

  • Had our phones with Amaysim for a couple of years now. No problem except for once sending out a data card for a table pre activated.. :-( Otherwise value for money they are great.
They are on the Optus network and unless we are in very remote areas, the connections are great.

Check your settings. Amaysim / Optus is not as bad as you are making out them to be.

Car-la-la.. Why are you using internet based navigation? So old hat.. Get Here maps.

    • Seconding Here Maps. It's brilliant. I haven't touched Google Maps since it came out. The driving navigation actually works like a dedicated navigator, too (GM likes to announce turns with no warning at all).

      • Sygic is another very good offline nav system too but most have to pay for that one :-(

Haven't had any problems with Amaysim, been with them for a few years. Customer service is great.

Recently I found that reception and data speed were slow. After some investigation it turned out to be my fault. Somehow the setting for the SIM was at Prefer 2G Networks. Not sure how that happened, whether accident or some fiddling I forgot about. It happened after the expiry of the second SIM (I have a dual SIM phone) which I got for $1 when they had a deal. Anyway once I returned this setting to Prefer 3G Networks, reception bars and data speed were back to the way it used to be.

So that's something you might want to check.

Yep I've got Amaysim on the Y550($40 from Harvey's) and my reception has been great in Meblourne. Probably better than with Boost(are they 4G yet?). Never had an issue with it dropping out and can actually get faster internet than the ADSL I have in Fitzroy.

I dare say it is something specific to your phone setup or you just got unlucky.

  • I've been using Amaysim for a few years with three phones and no issues at all except for when I needed a new sim without the breakout for the mini sim. The "help" desk posted a new one out but cancelled the existing one immediately and then took their sweet time actually putting the new one in the post.

Here maps is great. I bought a very cheap nokia windoze phone and run Here maps etc. on it with NO sim. Cheapest navigator I ever had.

  • Buy boost $20 start kit at United petrol station for $10 :)
Credit for 30 days and come with 1G dada

  • Sorry to hear this. But just to share, I had been using Amaysim for a few years now, and always happy with them. I even sent them messages when I was overseas, twice, when my roaming didnt work and they resolve that for me. I am from Brisbane tho. Not sure about your area's coverage.

  • I have been with Amaysim for a number of years now & it is great for me (I have a Sony Ericsson phone). However when hubby tried Amaysim, he couldn't get a good reception while at home (He has an iphone). Seems where we live, only Telstra works with iphones, as our daughter who is on Optus gets a poor connection with her iphone from our place, too. So hubby now uses Boost on the $20 plan (which lasts 30 days) & that suits him well. I've always found Amaysim customer service really good.

  • I just changed to Amaysim and found the connection really bad. I keep losing data connection, whatsapp messages sitting there undelivered, etc. Will change to telechoice once I finish this 3 months deal. No use having 5GB data as I can't even use it :/

  • I have a similar problem and Live Close to Sydney CBD. Found it Ridiculous that Optus couldn't get their reception right in Such a high density area because it means that they would Lose Alot of Customers.

I was a very big advocate from Amaysim and had been a customer for 3 years but Have recently switched to Telstra. Optus reception kept getting worse and worse. Thank you OzBargain, Woolworths and Telstra for my $30 Starter packs that cost $1. I have enough to last me 6 months. Very happy about that deal.

I have switched my Main number to Telstra and very happy with Telstra.

but I will still continue to collect free or $1 Amaysim 5GB data packs on the side Just incase i need it.

    So from my experience.

Use Telstra As your main phone
Use Amaysim for Backup Only and only get it When Amaysim has deals like $1 for 5GB data

  • Ok dude, I signed up to this site just so I could tell you how to fix this problem, as I had it myself. I'd used Amaysim for years with my iPhone 5s with absolutely no problems and great coverage, then I switched to the Oneplus One and it all went to shit.

So this will fix the problem. First, go into settings, then go to access point names. You'll see a long list of APNs. Make sure you are connected to "Optus Internet", under the title in grey text it will read "yesinternet".

After you choose this APN, delete all the others.

Now you should be good. I was.
