Improving PS3 Memory to More than 12GB

Hi guys,

Just bought a ps3 12gb PS3 from BigW for $50. I'm looking at adding more memory so that I can use it for games (probs 250gb+).

I'm not entirely sure which HHD's are suitable and will fit in the super slim.

any recommendations and any sales that you know that exist that will help me heaps as I am gaming and tech illiterate.

Thanks

  • When I pulled an old "broken" PS3 apart to replace a faulty hard drive, it was just a standard old 2.5" hard drive.

I replaced it with an old 128GB Kingston SSD and the machine formatted it by itself. Good as new.

I managed to do it with very few problems with the help of YouTube. Just search "PS3 Hard Drive Swap Guide" and you should be able to follow the steps with great ease.

  • $50? Cry. Just spent $171 at Harvey Norman

    • came with a skylanders bundle, picked it up this morning. My last non handheld console was the N64 so thought id get something new.

bought 2 just so I had a second controller for my brother as controllers can cost 50+ new.

      • Was the box damaged or something? I wonder if any of the rest of us can get this same deal.

        • Nah there were clearance. I already have a ps3 and bought one as a gift. I think most stores had stock but since the price is so good they would all be sold out by now.

I think literally any 2.5" hdd will work, I used a Hitachi from an old laptop. I've discovered games are actually pretty cheap on PSN, regretting some of the discs I bought. If you're gonna play psn downloaded games, consider an SSD, otherwise don't bother. Regardless, you just put it in and the console takes care of the rest. It won't have the caddy for the hdd though, so look up credit card hdd ps3 super slim diy caddy whilst you wait for real one on ebay ($10)

    • Yeah I recommend using any old HDD from a laptop. 200gb for example is plenty for the game installation data if he's using discs. (discs are cheaper than download copies, most of the time)

      • Yeah but 10 seconds to load up the last of us off SSD vs 90 off disc. Plus on PSN IT WAS $25 for definitive /goty edition (whatever, the one with Left Behind and all the dlc) vs the $20 I paid for regular version from HN.

And the load and seek on Red Dead Redemption is ATTROCIOUS. The disc is constantly seeking… Not just spinning but tick tick ticking, it's really loud. Wish I'd got it for the 360 instead, just load everything on to the hdd, it's quiet as. The one thing 360 has going for it over PS3. Besides that I like the controller more.

I'd recommend reading through those if you are not sure… basically any 2.5" hdd that is not bigger the 9.5mm in height should work…

To do it properly you'll need to buy the bracket. The 12GB model doesn't come with it.

Just ebay search "ps3 hard drive bracket."
    Should be less than $10.
