Calling Australian mobile that is overseas - who pays?

Hi,

I've been making calls to an Australian number (from within Australia) but the person I'm calling is overseas.

I presumed that the person who receives the call pays for it? However, I've just got a warning from LiveConnected that I've "reached my standard limit" and I'm $83.36 up?

Who pays for the call?

Thanks

The person you are calling pays for the international part of the call, you pay whatever you would normally pay to call the Australian mobile number regardless of where that person is.

  • What bonezAU said. Hope that person realises the cost of roaming. Maybe that limit message is to do with data, not calls?

    • Nope data is at 4%, calls are very low too (10-20%).

It makes no sense. Do I pay for sms to an aussie number overseas?

      Ive contacted LC.

      • You pay the local costs, they pay the roaming costs. It makes perfect sense. How are you meant to know they're roaming? You're dialling an Australian mobile number, so you're connected to their Australian telco. If they've turned roaming on that means the Aus telco is then forwarding that call/SMS on their request to an overseas Telco. So they incur the extra roaming charges.

        • Ha no greenpossum made sense- me being charged does not make sense.

In my account it says "Current International Used
          100% - $3.27". Peculiar.

        • @ycon: Can't you get a breakdown of your spend from your account page or something? Or is LC that bad?

      • Yes, if you normally pay for SMSes to local mobiles, then you pay the same if they are roaming. Roaming means that the number behaves as if it were local.

  • U as the sender or caller only pay the normal charge as if that person was in the country. How are you to know they are overseas? It wouldn't be fair for them to charge the person making the call.

Caller = international phone call costs
    Received = roaming costs

    • Can you confirm this? This is what it looks like- as I've got a random $86 excess cost

      • …how do you want me to confirm this?

  • If you're worried about costs why not use something like Skype and put some credit on and just call..You end up paying but it's probably going to be cheaper?
