Thinking of getting a PS Vita

My main problem is that games are now practically impossible to find in stores, Big W has been clearing them out for months and they have none left, K Mart doesn't stock handheld games anymore, EB Games had 6 or 7 games and I don't know about Target. JB Hi-Fi had quite a few on their website though. Because there aren't many games in store I'll have to buy digitally but do most games get a digital release? And what are prices like on the PSN store? I checked P4G and that was $55 which is quite a bit but Killzone Mercenary is only $25 which is good. And I'd like to catch up on some PSP games but their prices can be expensive as well, Persona 3 was $45 but Valkyria Chronicles and Vice City Stories is only around $20 which is good enough. Also, because the console isn't going to be really getting new games, the cheaper the console the better. I'd probably end up getting it pre owned from EB for $168 even though I'm not really comfortable paying that much, $150-$160 would be my preferred price range, what are the chances it goes on sale in an EOFY sale? Or could we get any good deals because most deals I've seen are at $200 (except one from Amazon.de which was $160 with 10 games but theres no chance of something like that happening again). How much is it at Big W? I've seen them in store but forget to check the prices and it's not on their website.

  • I don't think they are at Big W anymore. They were included in the latest big drop sale where a heap of games went on sale for ridiculous cheap prices. Apparently Vita's went down to $50 so there is no hope of finding them anywhere. I'm looking for one too. Best bet I figure is waiting for EB to have another big pre-owned sale and getting one then, getting cheap memory cards from ebay/ preowned at EB and then going all digital. Remember that memory cards are basically essential and are proprietary so cost a butt load. Best to include the price of one at the time of getting your Vita.

That seems to be the best option, I only saw that Big W sale now otherwise I would be all over that, hell I would've bought it before it got that cheap. Guess we just have to wait for an EB sale.

      • Cash converters has some too and they have a bit of a warranty unlike buying second hand off ebay or something.

        • I checked my local Cash Converters before I posted the topic and they had no Vitas.

        • @sarmen2: I was looking at their online webshop. They have a couple.

  • you can buy games on ebay at reasonable prices

I reckon it's better to go digital anyway. Don't have to worry about losing your carts. Just invest in a 64gb memory card, subscribe to PS+ and get a couple of free games every month. PS+ occasionally has discounts on some good titles. I got P4G for about $24 on PS+ . Saw Danganronpa 1 and 2 going for about 24 each as well before.

Also, PS vita can't play physical copies of PSP because lack of UMD, but there's quite a lot of PSP games released on the PSN store.

As for buying the Vita itself, I reckon you should just wait a bit and see if everyone starts clearing their Vita stock. It's practically a dead device everywhere outside Japan anyway. Heck, there was almost zero coverage on it in E3. I'm not surprised if shops start slashing prices on them.

    • Vita stock is already gone. Big W just did it. Basically the only place to get them is JB Hifi and EbGames.

    • How much is PS+ anyway? And what about setting up a US account? How complicated/difficult is that, mainly cause the US has gotten some games we haven't.

      • PS+ is about $70 (AUD) a year. That's on AU PSN store tho.
If you want a US account, just sign up in the US PSN and log in with that. Pretty straight forward. Annoying thing with the Vita tho is, you gotta use different memory cards for different PSN accounts. So if you want to have both a US and AU/JP/wherever account, you need two different memory cards.

my advise is to find VITA on a gumtree. a lot of people are selling it too cheap.

as i personally own couple of VITAs, i have stopped playing on vita out of absolute frustration after the game (uncharted) crashed on level 19, i cant go ahead from one point which makes me so angry. it happens on both the VITAs (slim and phat) and happens with both digital and physical copies of the game. apparently these errors are very common on several other games.

on more thing, both VITAs are terrible even with a little bit of sunlight, i can use it on melbourne trains.
at some harveynormans like narre warren in victoria the AAA games are in the order of 14 to 25 bucks.

if you are into indie games, only this week I have realised how cheap they are on PC steam, GOG or humble. any $100 tablet from china (7 or 8 inch) with ipega tablet gaming controller would be so much better and more versatile.

    • I got a Vita off of Gumtree before I saw your post yesterday afternoon for $115, which as you said it too cheap. And I guess I'll have to check my local Harvey Norman for games, thanks.

      • Did you get the phat or the slim?

        • Pretty sure it's the phat and I don't think I'll bother with making a US account.

    • That's weird… I've had little to no crashes of games on the Vita… I've had it 4x longer than a PS4, and I've had games on the PS4 crash more times than the Vita.

      • not too sure. but i searched for the error code and apparently its common error crashing several games

  • Welp, I knew the memory cards were expensive but those prices are just unbelievable and I missed out on the Big W sale. Harvey Norman has 8GB cards online for $14 which is good right? I'm not going to find anything cheaper than that am I?

Yes, I bought 2 online delivered because my local HN store was sold out. $14 is pretty good as bigw clearance sale cards were probably all scalped :/

      • Yeah I better get two as well.

        • I would recommend getting a 32GB/64GB right off the bat tho. Unless you don't mind swapping cards/deleting games. Had an 8GB at first and it was only enough to fit 3 "big" titles at a time :/. Decided to invest in a 64GB and i regret nothing now lol

        • @Encipher: If you picked up one from Bigw for $3 recently then that's excellent, but usually those cards are very expensive. So the best alternative (the one I took) was to get 2 x8 gb cards. Ultimately that's 15 gbs and more than i'll ever use. Only game I wanted to download was a Naruto game that was previously on psp that's one gig.

        • @watty:

I suppose it just depends on the individual. I have a couple of platformers which i play on and off (free stuff from PS+), and also a couple of RPGs which i'm not willing to delete. Need for Speed takes up nearly 3GB, Killzone takes up MORE than 3GB… I find 8GB just simply insufficient for my needs.

But yes, I know they're really expensive. I bought my 64GB card for $80 secondhand cause it was the cheapest i could find at the time.

        • Price is pretty much the only reason I'm going for the 8GB cards, $80 is way too much and 32GB ones are out of my price range as well.
