Recommend a Single Malt Whiskey

I recently backed into a friends car and would like to give him a bottle of single malt whiskey by way of apology (he won't take cash).

There seems to be a few whisky aficionados here on OZB, and I was wondering if you would mind recommending your favourite drop?

I know nothing about whiskey, though my driving might suggest otherwise.

My budget is $100-$300, and while I don't want to skimp, I don't want to pay top dollar either. So if you know somewhere that has a good price…

Thanks for your help.

For $105 at Dan Murphy (usually has the best prices)…I would give him Yamazaki 12 years old….japanese whiskeys are very popular now….he will be pleased to receive that as a gift…
alternatives would be Lagavulin 16, also at $105…

or get him one of each and he will be happy….

    • Thanks very much obiwan.

Glenlivet 18yo is a great Scotch, much better than many more expensive ones.

Any recommendations for one of the best Australian produced Single Malt Scotch that I can give as a present? I will be bringing it overseas.

Can't make heads or tails in regards to ratings based on which barrel # it came out of. Sullivan's Cove seems to be good however a bit pricey for the rating. Bakery Hill seems to have well rated whiskeys that are more affordable.

    • never really bothered with Aus whiskys since they are overpriced compared to what you can buy from overseas at similar prices…although I have heard Sullivans is decent if you can find one….the Bakery hill looks to be more expensive per ml since it comes in a 500 ml bottle, compared to sullivans 700…
