Building my first PC for gaming. Any thoughts?

Hi, I'm planning to build my first PC this winter, hopefully ordering the components before June 30. I want it to be capable of 1080p/60fps gaming on modern titles (CS:GO, Fallout 4, etc.)

The final build is turning out more expensive than I hoped. If you can tell me any painless ways to bring down the cost, I'd really appreciate it.

  • you plan to over clock correct ?

if not then you could drop down to the 4460

and you plan to re purpose your old hdd correct ? if not your gonna want another hdd. ?

you might also consider buying everything from the same store.

    • Yeah I want to overclock. Otherwise maybe I could drop to the 4460 and ditch the CPU cooler?

I will need an HDD. Since the budget is stretched already, I plan to use SSD only for now with OS, apps, files, and 1 or 2 major games.

      • Keep CPU but hold off on the cooler and just use stock for time being and get hdd instead.
Then you can always pick up a decent cooler when you have some more spare cash.

        • I'd prefer SSD (even 120GB) so I can install the OS on it straight away, since all my media is on an external drive (1TB portable). The cooler would be more of an impulse decision, I saw it on clearance for $65 and it has very good reviews, but I can live with the stock fan.

    • Thinking about getting a similar build to this but no overclock, is there much difference between the 4460 and 4590?
Also would 18Gb better than 24Gb?

This will be my first build as well, why is buying from the same store better, easier returns, able to get a discount?
And would you recommend building it yourself (I've never done anything like this before) or paying an extra ~$80+ to get it assembled in shop

  • Pretty good build I'd say.

You might want to factor in a spinning disk drive for downloads/scratch area to store stuff.
In mine I've got SSD for OS and some games, Windows user profile on the spinning disk and rest of the games too.

I've had some bad experience with GSkill memory before - bad memory in one of two PC builds with GSkill RAM. I usually stick with Corsair.

    • Thanks for the advice. I was thinking I could survive with only a 256GB SSD for a few months before upgrading, considering the frequency of HDD sales.

  • Any particular need to want the PSU to be modular? You can easily save $50-$70 there. I'm not 100% sure whether the 290 is future proof at 1080p 60fps. If it was me I'd try cut costs and not go with an unlocked processor to save money on the cpu, motherboard and cooler and try bump up the graphics card.

    • Good call, I might try the GTX 970 instead if I can afford it.

I read that a PSU is a good investment since it can be reused 1 or 2 times, but you're right, 80+ Gold and modular might be overkill.

      • 80+ Gold is essential if you're overclocking, modular is just a nice bonus if you like or need easier/neater cable management inside your case. If you don't need modular cables consider getting this for $119 if you're near Milton (noticed your profile location said Brisbane).
