Buying a car interstate

Hello

I live in Northern NSW about an hours drive from Qld. I am looking to get a cheap car and there seems to many more available in Brisbane or the Gold coast than locally.

My question is….can i buy a QLD registered car with a NSW driving licence. I would be wanting to transfer rego into NSW but am not sure if I can drive it home or if someone will sell it to me without a Qld Licence.

Thanks for any answers I have googled it a lot and still can't come up with a definite answer.

No problems with you driving a different state's car on your license.

  • As mentioned above you can drive a car registered in another state on your license.
I flew up to Brisbane to buy a car and drove it back to Melbourne.
Just visited Vicroads (or the RMS? in your case) to get it transferred over and new plates issued.

Yes, no problems. As soon as you register the car in NSW you'll get new NSW plates for it and you'll have to hand in the Qld plates.

Keep in mind that the Qld rego won't be valid in NSW, so if it has 6 months of Qld rego left when you go to RMS to get the car changed to your name (and thus changed state of ownership) you'll have to pay rego from scratch. There is probably a way to get a partial refund of the rego via the Qld RMS equivalent if you could be bothered.

But definitely add the cost of renewing rego to the cost of the car as it's an additional cost that you won't have for a NSW registered car.

Here's the info from the RMS website: http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/registration/get-nsw-registr…

  • Please make sure you do a REVS check to check for flood damage etc!

When you buy a vehicle interstate you have a similar period of time to transfer rego and plates (like you bought in NSW) BUT, you HAVE to get a blue slip - ie., it HAS to go over the pits in NSW.

    • it HAS to go over the pits in NSW.

You have to get a "blue" slip but this can be done at authorised unregistered vehicle inspection stations not the RMS infamous PITS

      From RMS website

If you buy a used vehicle that is not currently registered in NSW, the first thing you need to do is have the vehicle inspected at an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Station (AUVIS). If the vehicle passes inspection, the examiner will give you a signed, printed identity and safety check.

      • the 'pits' get you the blue slip. It's just terminology for a far more extensive inspection than a pink.

  • Thanks a lot for all the replies, it seems like its definitely possible so thats great I reckon I will be able to get a far better car for my money, now to gumtree…….
