I Don't Understand The Logic behind Printer Ink/Toner

I can buy 5 of these printers:

http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/fuji-xerox-…

For 125$ and get roughly 5000 pages of printing (their stats). Or… I can buy 1 of those ^ and 1 refill:

http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/fuji-xerox-…

For 128$ and get only roughly 3500 pages of printing (again, their stats)

Where is the sense in this? Ethically I feel bad about tossing something in the bin that can be refilled… but when it costs more to refill the thing than it is to buy it new, why would I refill it??

This to me is like buying a bottle of water for 1$ - and then taking it back to the supermarket to refill it for 2$

I think the Coffee Machine and the Pods are going towards that direction too

Where did you get 5,000 pages from?

It clearly states "Approximate starter page yield 1000 pages"

And if i buy 5 of them thats 5000 pages…

      • Cool.

It looks like that $25 for the printer is really good, having a quick (very quick) Google it is normally around the $80 to $100 mark.

So now you're complaining that the printer is on special?
Actually looks like they're clearing them out, thus the low price for the printer.

        • I didn't do a cost comparison on the printer. It's 25$ - I wouldn't expect to find a printer cheaper than that. I went to office works to look for inexpensive printers. I then looked up the cost of replacing the ink as that is a factor in my purchase.

There is no indication that the printer is on special on the pages I linked. So no, I am not complaining that the printer is on special. I am complaining that what appears to be at full retail value at officeworks, is cheaper to throw away and replace than to refill.

        • @geoffellis:

It appears to be full retail, but it is not.

So thats your answer, the printer is usually more expensive thus refills aren't so disproportionately more expensive.

In this instance, the printer is just heavily discounted to clear stock.

      5x1000 = 5000

He's saying if bought 5 printers.

  • Similar issue with all the cheap mobile broadband wifi modems that come with a starter SIM card offering data at $5 per GB, e.g. Optus HuaWei E5251 with 5GB data for $25, but then to recharge is $10 per GB.

They want to entice you to start using them by discounting the device and first lot of data (or ink) and then make the money off you when you recharge (or refill). Hence I have a lot of extra wifi modems sitting around being unused, because I bought them for the cheaper data they came with.

  • you can also buy the compatible toners on ebay. They're way cheaper and also shipped to your door !

  • I don't like it either. Such a waste of resources. I don't live the most economical life (yes I buy disposable nappies) but this is just wastage to the extreme.
