AUS Netflix Versus US Netflix

Hi all,

I'm trying to decide on whether I sign up for Australian Netflix, or US Netflix.
I already have a VPN subscription that I could use, so that's not part of the equation.

I know that at the moment, US Netflix has around 8000 titles, whereas Australian Netflix is more like 1100. Based on that alone the US seems like a better deal.

However, if I did go the US one it would obviously require the use of my VPN, which would make it slightly more complex for the family to use, and probably impact on the streaming bandwidth available (ie I'd be less likely to be able to stream HD content because of the VPN).

Thoughts?

I understood if you sign up for AU, but then connect with a VPN/Hola you see the full US catalog?
And the VPN is just to access the listing, I think. The stream comes off their cache boxes.

    • This is what I'm not sure of. Have never signed up for any streaming service so hoping to hear from those that have.

No need to mess with the billing. Whatever location Netflix sees your location from via IP address then you will access that countries catalogue. US IP then US site.

The cheapest current deal is to sign up for Optus and then use your VPN or DNS changer.
Alternatively, you can sign up via a Colombian IP and pay almost half the price. See this post.

        • And with the Colombian IP, can you access the US site?

          @jdf:

Doesn't matter where you sign up from or have billing from, the site will display the country's site based on your IP address. The advantage of this is that there are movies/tv shows not on the US site but are on the UK site. The DNS changer I'm signed up with allows you to change to a number of different regions.

Netflix Around The World /FlixSearch allows you to search for the title and see which region it is on.

        • @neil: That is cool, I must be one of the last to sign up, just did it last week and makes for much better selection than turning on free tv and there being nothing to watch

  • Thanks for the posts so far.

So If I am understanding things correctly, I could:

-Sign up and pay for the normal AUS Netflix, and use that.
-If I want to watch something that is on US Netflix but not AUS, I just sign in via VPN and then I'll see the US catalogue?

If so, that's pretty cool. Simpler than I expected.

Yes….but note that there have been reports of some VPNs blocked. Haven't heard the same for the smart DNS services though. Sign up for a trial and give it a whirl.

  • Not sure if you've already gone and signed up for something but I currently use Ad free time for US$2/month and no contract.

Unlocks the US catalogue without a problem and there seems to be no negative effect on speeds/bandwidth.

You can set it up on a per-device basis or a per-router basis and it takes only 5 minutes to setup.

use this screw useing a vpn to only access oither netflix regions.
No slow down in internet speeds also since its not a vpn but a DNS.
and there is a region switcher also.

Here is a lifetime discount for getflix subscriptions of 40% off standard priceing.

  • Thanks again for the replies.

Not really interested in paying for another service like getflix- I already have the VPN access so if I'm going to try and use non-AUS netflix it will be via that.

Seems like there's nothing to lose with the free trial anyway, will be signing up shortly.

  • Use a decent router (I recommend, use personally and professionally, Mikrotik), setup your VPN on that (MT's support SSTP, PPTP, OVPN to mention a few), define the Netflix IP ranges (readily available by doing a Google search) and route that traffic over your VPN.
