What Is a Good Price from SYD-HKG Return during End of Year Peak Season?

Hi,

Asking for advice: my mum's decided that Hong Kong would be ideal for a family trip at the end of the year, however with my brother still in school, we are limited to travelling at the end of the year.

Being a community full of savvy customers, what would you consider to be a good price for return tickets from Sydney to Hong Kong during late December returning January? Also when would be the best time to purchase tickets at said price?

Thank you for any information you might have.

  • We went to HK for (western) New Year and found tickets were expensive.
We ended up redeeming some frequent flyer points, but availability of those flights was limited.
The prices we saw were in the order of $750 return of discount airlines (AirAsia with long lay overs) or around $1000 on full service.
I watched ticket prices for a full 12 months prior, and they never got decent discounts.
If I was going again, I would look at Cebu as probably the cheapest way to go.

  • Yep, I don't see you getting one for under $1000, or even $1100 on full-service airline other than Garuda if you can call them that.

Scoot has returns for around $750 but long transit time, especially on the return leg. Maybe you can book the return separately and spend a couple of nights in Singapore on the way back?

From around the 1st(and then more so by the ~15th) of December to 10th of January flights are a lot more expensive and they're usually excluded from any sales.

  • I went to Hong Kong at around the end of December last year. It costed me around $1.3k on Cathay Pacific. And as zappy mentioned, the flight period you mentioned will be excluded from any sales as it is the peak period for travelling. So i suggest the earlier you book the better, because i noticed last year, the closer you got to December, the more expensive it got for the flights.

  • Thanks everyone. Much appreciated.

  • I went to Hong Kong earlier this year (4 Jan - 25 Jan) with Qantas.

The ticket was $930 return which I considered reasonable/cheap for a full service airline at that point in time. I booked in March 2014 for January 2015.

I booked with STA when they had a promotion (book any Qantas flight to asia and get back $100) so I ended up paying $830 out of my own pocket.

  • Ended up booking with Scoot return for $670.17 (21/12-11/1) very happy :)
