How to Snag a Cheap Windows 7, 8 Pro License?

Wasn't interested in getting one, so didn't bother with previous deals. Now I want one.

How best to snag a cheap license. I'm wanting it to get free windows 10 pro license. I can then install as virtual PC.

Thinking of going through gumtree looking for a (broken) PC with license key sticker attached? Any other recommendation.

Saw a previous deal costing $50, so that's probably my budget.

Thanks,

  • IT/CompSci at uni will likely have a free license.

  • Buy a Windows COA sticker off ebay.

I've bought keys from here with no issues. Had a few Win 8 Pro licenses going for over a year now.

    • Yup! I paid only US$25 for a win7 ultimate license key. Doesn't get any cheaper than that!

    • That is a VERY good deal for an win 8 pro license. If it is a genuine retail license then I'll consider it in future. If not then they are really MSDN keys that eventually can get blacklisted/deactivated. More info here

Could you help getting more information on the license by running 'slmgr -dlv' (without quotes) from command prompt?
Note: for Windows 7 you can run MGAdiag.exe tool from Microsoft - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

        Product Key Channel : Retail

Like I said I bought 2 Win 8 Pro licenses about 1.5 years ago through these channels and they're going strong.
The Office ones work fine as well.

I don't know how they get these keys, but they've been working and my friends don't report issues either.

If they fail, it's $20, and I'll go back to various other means in installing Windows. It won't involve paying $250 though.

        • Oh well for me it is not about spending 20 or 250. If it is not legal then it is not the right thing to do. I did further digging and found an answer here. Apparently there is no way to tell if they key is genuine retail vs msdn unless you call Microsoft.

If you sign up to the Insider program you get Windows 10 for free. Only catch is you will be updated to the new beta builds when updates come out so you will always be testing for them.
