Opal Card Retail Top up

Hi

I recently topped up my opal card at a retailer but however the amount is not showing up on my account balance and it has been a week.

I have not used the card since I topped up so I do not the actual balance on the card?

Is this normal?

  • Request a balance adjustment
    To request a balance adjustment call 13 67 25 (13 OPAL).

  • +1

I seem to remember that for some strange reason the system doesn't apply the top up to the card until next use. But I think it should show on the account webpage if a registered card.

    • Yep this is it

  • Ok that's a little odd.. I recently topped up my opal card and it is showing up in my account even though I haven't used it yet since. Maybe it will show up the next time you use your opal card…

  • I know in some instances the credit just sort of sits there and isn't actually reflected until you tap on/off somewhere.

  • That's definitely not normal. The Opal Card top up receipt actually shows the new balance on it when I top up at Woolie and it should be instant.

Did you top up by credit card/eftpos? Check if the money had been deducted from your account if you did and call Opal.

  • I gave them a call and they said the next time I tap on the amount should show up on the balance.

I have not used it since the top up.

  • I find that happens to me too. The funds go onto the card itself only I believe, under that scenario. Then when you tap on it uploads that transaction from your card to the Opal network and your on-line account (and the screen where you tapped on says something like $xx.xx added).

It's a weird system. I hate also when you top-up via your account on the Opal web site it takes up to an hour to become valid because it has to download that transaction to all train gates, buses and ferries in the network. Then it's added to your card at next tap after that.

    • I think it's because the card also keeps track of the credit so that it can function to a limited extent offline and this amount has to updated if the credit has increased. What the Woolies terminal updates IS the master credit in the system because it shows up on the account page.

Surely you don't believe that every update has to be sent to every terminal ahead of time? It's sent on demand. It's not much of an ask these days for terminals to be online, most of the time at least.
