Multi-TB SSD's

Thought this was interesting; finally 2TB and 4TB standard form-factor SSD's.

  • Yup,they're pretty much all for enterprise servers where space is an issue and they want a high number of re-writes a second for a small amount of data. I read an article a few months back about how SSDs had overtaken mecahnical drives in some data centres, as they no longer need a massive array of hard drives to get the same speed. Combined with energy costs there are a few savings to be had

  • Just built up a 3PAR with 12 3.84TB cMLC SSDs for a client. $120k worth of SSD right there. The speed of these things and increased CPU performance in controllers is also what makes on the fly deduplication a lot more palatable as there's little performance overhead now.
