Australian Finance and Property Investment Forums

I'm hoping to get a list of Australian finance/property forums, in order to get a better understanding of investing and the market in general.

I've been to a number of forums in the past (Whirlpool was helpful, HotCopper less so) and seen a few names thrown around here (e.g. Property Chat), but are there sources I've missed that I should take a look at?

    motley fool

    read the news

    • I do read financial news from time to time (Bloomberg, BusinessDay, AFR, etc.).

I've read Motley Fool too, although I find that their stories seem to be over-the-top marketing pitches for certain stocks the authors like. Which would be fine, except that their predictions are often wrong (i.e. how Woolworths was a 'must-buy' for months early on this year).

      • im talking about the discussion boards.

you're suppose to read the underlying reasons for their predictions and make your own judgement call.

also read normal news too. world & local events are a big factor in economical and business movements

        • Oh wow, I had no idea they had discussion boards! Thanks for the tip

        • @punkindrublic: dunno if any good though. I personally don't have any interest in investments

      • I am a member of Motley Fool. Interestingly enough this stock market game is a revolving door in the short term 1 day to 365 days, so predictions are only deemed correct if a price reaches your own predetermined sell point. If you are lucky enough to take profit at that point, great, otherwise it is a waiting game. However in the longer term 1 year+ the overall price generally increases, provided the Australian/World economy is stable or growing.
Getting back to Motley Fool. Within their site is a list of their historical "buy" stocks that are being tracked daily. Whilst some are not performing, the majority that have, have far outweighed these. Though I agree all sellers of Stock market advice tend to over market themselves in a bid to increase revenue, and The Fool is just as guilty as the rest.

    Somersoft is the best.

    • It's also being archived.

      • Most from Sommersoft have moved over to propertychat, setup by the web guys for sommersoft.

  • I rate highly macrobusiness.com.au - but be warned, I don't think they don't say what you are wanting to hear. They were extremely accurate on the mining bust and some of the larger issues (Greece, AUD) so I see value in what they say.

"They were extremely accurate on the mining bust and some of the larger issues (Greece, AUD)"

You'd have to be living under a rock not to have seen that coming.
What about all the things that they continually get wrong?

Clearly the government, treasury, BREE, and the whole of WA are still living under said rock as they still think the mining bust is just a short term issue.

I am sure they do get things wrong (especially our property market but the whole world sees us as odd on that front) but on the Australian finance side they do well. Or maybe it is my bias as the information I have acted on has been profitable.

  • Somersoft is a good one as 2jzzzz mentioned.
You get the odd good stuff off r/AusFinance (reddit) too, but wouldn't use it for serious financial advice.
