Returning goods for full refund. Only offered a store credit

Hi everyone. bought yesterday from local lighting place, a couple ceiling lamp shades for the house.
That night I changed my mind and wanted something different.
I returned to store the next day, receipt in hand and everything boxed up and fully sealed and packed.
I said I wanted to return them, they refused and said best they could do is if I bought something more expensive and used it as a credit.
O said they didn't have in store something more suitable to my 'Like's and style'
Again, they refused to refund and only offered a store credit.
Is the shop obligated to refund my purchase? Offer money back? Or is a store credit for more expensive item correct?

Thanks in advance.

Is the shop obligated to refund my purchase? Offer money back?

No, not for change of mind.

Or is a store credit for more expensive item correct?

It doesn't have to be for a more expensive item, it can be for anything. For a customer's change of mind, they aren't obligated to do anything, store credit is a gesture of goodwill.

  • they don't have to refund you or give you store credit.
the only reason they HAVE to refund you is if the item has a major fault.
minor fault they can choose to replace repair or refund.

They're under no obligation to give you a refund of any type for a "change of mind" reason.

    Comeon! this is ozbargain 101!

    • I've only once seen a store over a no obligation so most are probably under.

Theyre giving you a store credit which is nice of them, even though they have no legal obligation to do so.

Refund is only after a major fault.

  • some credit cards offer refund protection.

  • Thanks guys, appreciate the replies and info.

    Cheers.
