Oz East Coast Budget Nov-Dec

Hello everyone,

My girlfriend and I are planning to roadtrip up the east-coast this Summer (start of Nov - first week of Dec) and wanted to get your help!

Im trying to get a rough estimate of the expense of a couple traveling from Sydney to Cairns for around 5 weeks?

The plan is to hire a camper van for the journey up and then fly back to Sydney from Cairns. I priced this a little and think it will cost approx $3000 for the camper hire. I'd be interested to hear from others who have done a similar trip to how much spending money we will need to complete our journey.

We are in our mid 20's so are up for doing lots of activities such as surfing, kayaking, scuba diving etc. Adding to this fuel, camp sites, food and drink i just dont know how much is enough.

I love this site and have already made good use of the deals for our holiday by purchasing the theme park pack from living social (warner bros, wet n wild, sea world) and tickets for the Australia zoo from groupon and will be on the lookout for other deals such as these that interest us.

We would appreciate any comments and tips

Thank you in advance!

  • $25 a day for food is fine if you're buying from supermarket and making it yourself.
$50 if you'd like to splurge. budget for $35 if it'll be half half.

of course this doesnt include alcohol, as drinks are quite expensive on the east coast… especially at restaurants.

most campsites charge around $5-$15 a night. can get expensive. If you can, just park on side of road and sleep there lol. (is this illegal?)

fuel is easy to calculate. assume your shitter camper will use 1 litre per 8km.

I would budget $90-$100 a day (for all costs)

    • $5 each/night for a National Park camping spot, if you're planning to camp in caravan parks (why?!) then expect to pay upwards of $25/night.

na, prices in National Parks vary, depending on park and site facilities.

  • Hi,

    Do this first:

Check out the sites http://www.bookme.com.au and http://allthedeals.com.au/ according to where you think you might be…

Check carefully the Terms and Conditions and any Exclusions before you buy to avoid disappointment.

I went BNE-CNS by Train and it was a long trip but Cairns is great.

Check out YHA's if you want somewhere to stay along the way, I stayed at:
