Standby Ticket Bargains (Melbourne Airport to International Destination)

Has anyone tried to grab a discount ticket to a international destination from Melbourne Airport?

I want the mystery and challenge of hanging out at the Airport all day and waiting for a cancellation or an empty seat and negotiating a next to nothing fare to use this resource? Better yet scoring 4 seats for my family would have me reach ultimate satisfaction.

Has anyone successfully done this in 2015? I know it used to happen a quite a lot when I worked for Ansett many moons ago.

Cheers,

Dan

  • I hope this isn't a thing. God knows how many weekends I'd end up wasting if I thought for half a second I could end up with a $100 pot luck ticket.
packs bags with warm clothes and board shorts

  • I didn't know this was even a possibility, interesting approach!

  • What about coming home though? You might score a dirt cheap flight outbound but what if you are not so lucky on your return?
    What about visas etc?

If there is a cancellation with a return you could probably negioiate to purchase the return leg as part of your initial offer, remember the airline will fly the plane seat empty and they won't say no to making profit twice. You need to think on your feet with this kind of extreme ozbargaining.

      • Yes finitely extreme oz bargaining ha ha

I think stand by, other than upgrades to business class, are a thing of the past. Worth phoning airlines to check it out. Good luck

I don't think standby tickets are available anymore, they're only for staff
