Gaming console recommendations?

Hey Guys,
I am looking to buy a gift, a gaming console for someone, who loves Mario and similar games.
I know Nintendo wii has Mario but is there any other platform say Xbox or PS that has Mario and similar low pace, low violence games?
What will be your recommendation? Not looking to spend any more than $200.

I think most of you can figure out I don't know much about video games.

Cheers.

    No.

Buy them a Wii U and mario kart and super smash bros.

Unless you want to trawl eBay for a Nintendo 64 or Game Cube.

You are probably looking at spending closer to $300

You could also get them a 3DS XL for around $200. Note if you do make sure you buy them a charger as well as the new 3DS doesn't include one in the box

  • Block-quote Not looking to spend any more than $200.

    A 3DS?

  • You can buy a wii for around $50 nowadays and get 'good enough' Marino kart and Super Mario Bros. plus an extra controller perhaps and come in under/around $200. Or go for latest and get the Wii U. I have the latter and over half the time my kids are playing Wii (Not Wii U) games; they don't care that it's not latest and greatest (yet).

If you want Mario Kart you need to go Nintendo. If you want it for under $200 try getting a Nintendo Wii which are not available new from the major retailers any more. It had been replaced by the Nintendo Wii U which is over $300.

Pre-owned Nintendo Wii from EB Games for $54! https://ebgames.com.au/wii-135693-Wii-Console-preowned-Ninte…

    Mario Kart pre-owned $36 https://ebgames.com.au/wii-142178-Mario-Kart-preowned-Ninten…
    New Super Mario Bro pre-owned $47 https://ebgames.com.au/wii-147794-New-Super-Mario-Bros-preow…
Throw in Skylanders SWAP Force Starter Pack $19 https://ebgames.com.au/wii-161364-Skylanders-SWAP-Force-Star…
    Another pre-owned controller for $22 https://ebgames.com.au/wii-139030-Wii-Remote-Controller-preo…

    • This month you can recieve 20% off preowned games for purchasing a preowned console, the wii is included.

  • Hi AJ,

a few questions how old is the person? 20, 30, 40, 15 …..would be helpful in coming up with an answer

    and also

do they currently own any or all of the following?

    Nintendo (NES)
    Super Nintendo (SNES)
    Nintendo 64 (N64)
    Wii
    Wii U

this is a good starting basis better gift ideas

  • Honestly, I think the PS4 is the best console or maybe I'm just being bias. Low violent games like mario are always available on nintendo consoles which would be the Wii, Nintendo DS, etc. You might want to do some research on how much these consoles cost.

    • Well, the only thing the PS4 offers at the moment is Bloodborne and Infamous, and I don't think OP is looking for those with a $200 budget and someone who wants low violence games.

She is 13, owns Nintendo wii.
Damn there are heaps of others Nintendo stuff that I am not aware of..

    • Buy a Wii U. Big W has the console + Splatoon (think of water guns, but replace that with paint, kid-friendly) for $328 at Big W.

Plus, the Wii U can play old Wii games and use old Wii accessories! I personally love my Wii U!

I think a new 3ds (not the xl) would be great for her.

      • Cheapest is at target for $209
      • plays old ds games
      • customizable cover plates
      • supports Nintendo's figurines "Amiibo" without any add ons
      • it's portable (take it anywhere)

Must have games - Mario kart 7, New super Mario bros 2, animal crossing and paper Mario.

agree with budget of around 200 and for a 13 yo girl, 3DS is the best bet.

mario kart 7 on that is great!

  • Yeah I think for a girl the 3DS Would be the way to go. These are the games that have mario in them. Super smash bros, Mariokart 7, Mario vs donkey kong tipping stars, Mario party island tour, new Super Mario bros 2, Paper Mario sticker star, Super Mario 3d land, Mario tennis open, Mario World gold tour & a few more so plenty of Mario action lol

If you were going to get a 3DS, would advise that you look out for the 'New' 3DS rather than the old model 3DS. Just something worth reminding if you're not into the gaming scene and is not aware that there's a difference. Original 3DS and 3DS XL does not have a c-stick and ZL/ZR buttons and amiibo support, but New 3DS and New 3DS XL does.

On the other hand, if you don't mind the older model 3DS then all is good.

  • Rayman, Pyschonaughts, LittleBigPlanet, SuperMeatBoy, Spelunky. All great platformers that are on non Nintendo platforms.

I'd recommend buying a 3DS ahead of a WiiU as it has games and a future.

    • I'd argue against that, but Nintendo basically rocked up to E3 with a hangover and some thick shades on and stayed quiet for the entirety, save for putting a bunch of worthless amiibos on the table, so I'd have no ammunition in that argument. They've lost interest in the Wii-U. It's still got a few amazing games coming (Provided their lazyness hasn't screwed up Starfox), but yeah. "Come back next year for the NX" is all they wanted to say on any consoles. Kudos to the others, especially Sony, for actually having games to show, but minus points for promising to remake Uncharted 1, 2 and 3. Whilst you're at it Sony, gonna remake original Crash Bandicoot? You've already put all the other Naughty Dog games on PS4, eh?

Also, what Nintendo did to Metroid has made me want to emulate that one scene from Frankenstein with the pitchforks and the flaming torches. But that Level5 game looks okay, especially for kids.

Also Shovelknight, to add to that list of awesome platformers… But I think Shovelknight is on 3DS and Wii-U.
